If you’d actually read any of Andy’s posts you’d have known that…but then you wouldn’t have been able to have the last word given that that was his last post for a while would you?

Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind. As a wise chap with a holy spliff tin once said. If you’re seeing cages everywhere, it may be that they are of your own construction.

Don’t you dare to deny the Power of Bob or I’ll be forced to issue the first Rastafarian Fatwah.

Two soldiers who dived into a freezing canal to rescue a comrade after he was blown up by a Taliban bomb have been awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.
Second Lieutenant Connor Maxwell, 22, and Rifleman Daniel Nickson, 23, both of 3rd Battalion the Rifles, pulled the unconscious soldier out of the 3ft deep water and evacuated him so he could receive medical treatment.
Rfn Nickson, from Darlington, County Durham, was hailed for his “courage and selflessness” in risking his own life by leaping into the fast-flowing canal in Helmand on December 15 last year.
Lt Maxwell, from Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, was also praised for saving the life of a serviceman who was wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) during training on the firing ranges at Camp Bastion, the main Nato base in Helmand.
A total of 131 servicemen and women – most of whom served in 11 Light Brigade’s bloody tour of Afghanistan between October 2009 and April this year – were awarded medals in the latest military honours list, nine posthumously.
Acting Corporal Andrew Wardle, 22, of 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, receives the Military Cross for his bravery during his tour of Helmand mentoring Afghan soldiers.
Warrant Officer Class 2 Patrick Hyde, 34, of 4th Battalion the Rifles, is awarded a Mention in Despatches for his “exemplary gallantry”.

Just a sample of a story published September this year in the British press. You will note that military personnel rarely use the term hero or heroic to describe there actions. They are labels left to society, a society that like to label things. A society that needs it labels to be as politically correct and headline grabbing as possible.

Your television channels, your radio stations, your print media, label people who consider themselves as simply doing there job as hero’s. It is not the choice of the people involved. To be perfectly honest, until those in the “field” are made aware by the same media, management or family of what is being said at home, they would have little to no idea.

In military terms there are very few military hero’s, it is more of a American term, a sensationalism.

Hero is a very personal word, a very personal choice. In a military conflict there are hero’s on both sides, however both sides will disagree about that very same event. Hopefully each and every one of you have your own hero’s you don’t have to rely on others.

But to those families who have sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, serving all over the globe, in British uniforms, I am sure they consider those family members hero’s. Which of course is there personal choice.

With this being my last post, as I head to Afghanistan tomorrow. I wish you and all your hero’s a very merry, happy and healthy Christmas, no matter what race, religion, creed or denomination, they may fall into.
