I had a day off today, so thought I would defrost the “frost free” (yer right) fridgefreezer.
So I had a small blow-heater in front of it and my great big carving knife and some hot water in bowls and off I went. Once it got a bit melted I started my hacking….. wrong move. Ive done it loads of times before, but I took one fowl swoop and all of a sudden there was this hissing noise………….
Of course it was switched off at the time, but I think all the gas or whatever it is in there has completely gone. Ive got it all switched on, the lights are on in the fridge but neither the fridge or freezer are getting cold. :?
I wouldnt mind but we have not been proper shopping for ages and we went today and spent 40 quid purely on frozen stuff that is now starting to get soggy!!
Its just my luck really. So, what do you reckon, should I cut my losses and try and get a cheapo new/2nd hand one from ebay (which is all I could afford), or should I get it repaired…. could it be repaired? :?: :?: :?:

Ya great twassack Sharon lol. No hun I,m afraid you,ll have to get a new one. My hubby did the same thing to one of my fridges once with a carving knife. It,ll end up costing you more than the fridge is worth to get it repaired. Buy a new one hun. You can get cheap ones in Argos.
14 November, 2006 at 9:14 am #248663Yeah so,
You’ve cut the throat of your compressor effectively through a major artery with the same dire results. A replacement unit will cost more than a new fridge/freezer from many normal outlets. That confirms what you know already; however, if the damaged tube is accessible as it most probably is it could be repaired/rejoined and the refrigerant coolant replaced. Have you contacted an air conditioning company and asked whether they could repair it on site? It’s worth the price of a phone call.
14 November, 2006 at 10:17 am #248664Do you realise that you have single-handedly added to the global warming gasses????
Your gross negligence with a carving knife has caused the illegal release of refrigerant gasses (Freon???) into the atmosphere and if the glaciers melt and finish off the human race……………
…………… it’s ALL YOUR FAULT !!!!!!!
As for the suggestion that your dead fridge is ”fly tipped” ….. words fail me. Not only are you complicit in killing off the entire human race, and all those cuddly doggies and rabbits etc …. but now you are being advised to break EU law on the safe disposal of white goods & refridgerators.
You should be thouroughly ashamed of yourself.
