Had my renault clio auto mot’d today and this garage said had failed on rear brakes and needed to replace n/s/f outer drive shaft gaitor clip. I agreed to this and then when i went to collect it, on the reciept was also to replace both leaking wheel cylinders at rear and brake shoes. Inc the cost of the MOT i was charged £275.
was i taken for a ride?? any mechanics out there??
5 March, 2009 at 5:36 pm #393353If you agreed to the work done then no, bit expensive but not seriously so.
If the work was done in addition to anything you agreed to then yes you’ve been done.

Just get someone with Knowledge of cars, or take your car to another garage to check to see if the work has actually been carried out. If not, then you have an argument!

I get the idea you’re thinking they meant replacing the n/s/f gaitor clip would solve the brake failure part ?
5 March, 2009 at 5:46 pm #393356thanks agreed to rear brakes…expecting just the pads. also they tried saying i might need whole new shaft thingy for the gaitor, i rang my brother he said u can buy a gaitor thing for like 15 quid and stick it on, when i mentioned this to them they tried telling me it needed a metal one and would be no good..to which i replied will it pass the mot, they said yes. an hour later they rang to say that could get away with a metal clip costing a tenner, cause they knew i done my homework, but still seems extorsionate.
Oh well thats life huh !

5 March, 2009 at 6:49 pm #393358“Rear brakes failing” could mean ONLY the pads / shoes needed to be renewed – but when they dis-assembled the brakes, it isn’t unreasonable to have to replace the slave cylinders as well if they were found to be leaking.
Agreed it isn’t cheap but better that having hydraulic fliud leaking out slowly and inevitably leading to brake failure. That can be quite exciting if you aren’t expecting it!!!!!
5 March, 2009 at 9:49 pm #393359If the gaitor clip was missing dirt and bits of debris could have got in and damaged the universal joint on the drive shaft meaning that the shaft might need replacing, so them agreeing to put just the metal clip on, is at your request, rather than them worrying abt any possible damage done to the drive shaft. This could mean that long term damage could be done to the universal joint on the drive shaft, so they were in fact correct even though it may not need doing, they were possible covering their own arse incase it does damage it further. So there is always the possibility that the next MOT there will be a damaged universal joint, or if its bad (worse case scenario) the universal joint and drive shaft could break up when driving.
The rear brakes could have failed due to already leaking slave cylinders rather than pads or as well as, if it was only a small amount of leaking fluid it,may not have been obvious before disassembly.
Very often it is recommended that if the slave cylinders are leaking but the pads are fine to replace the pads anyway because of possible contamination from the brake fluid.6 March, 2009 at 8:23 am #393360Well thank’s for all your comments..as the car has been wrote off anyway (will get re-registered) some silly %%% hit me up the backside, was bumper n light damage only, the car was still written off. I bought it back as salvage cause has very low milage, and i really didnt want to spend lots on it..maybe i should have cut my losses and sent it to the great scrap yard in the sky!
pb thanks for putting it in layman’s terms unlike poli who has given me a complete headache lol… poli the secret mechanic lol.
