    Seems so, without your consent.

Why would a government introduce forced finger printing for children, without parentage approval?

Control? Oppress the future society? Way of easing you into the i.d card system?

FURY erupted yesterday after it emerged an estimated 700,000 children are being fingerprinted at school.

Systems in 3,500 primary school libraries allow pupils to take out books by scanning their thumb prints instead of using a card.

But campaigners warn the technology is a massive invasion of privacy and a step towards a “database state”.

With an average primary school size of 200 pupils, pressure group No2ID says at least 700,000 pupils are regularly having their fingerprints scanned.

And there are fears schools having children’s fingerprints could lead to the information being stored on government computers with DNA records and personal details.

It is also seen as “softening up” resistance before people are asked for biometric data such as eye-scans to put on compulsory identity cards.

Phil Booth of No2ID said: “Are we sending our kids to school or to prison? We wouldn’t accept fingerprinting for adults without informed consent so it is utterly outrageous that children as young as five are being targeted.”

But Andy O’Brien, managing director of Micro Librarian Systems which makes the fingerprint systems, insisted there was nothing sinister about the new scanning technology.

He said: “Ultimately, this is completely optional.

“If parents object because they don’t like the use of biometrics their children can still use a library card or pin number.

“But this can make libraries a really cool place to go for children.

“We have never had a single parent object to it, the children love it and it solves the problem of lost library cards.”

Other schools are increasingly using fingerprints to allow pupils access to premises or even to get into canteens.

If you are ever stopped by the police for something, and not charged, you dont have to give finger prints.

Surely the BNP would be in favour of a database to tackle crime, AND keep out ‘undesirables’? :-s

Fully support a national DNA database and one of fingerprints too

Have to agree Owen- anything which tackles crime and keeps “undesirables” out would be a big hit with the BNP, you’d think- unless of course they see a bigger media coup in being hypocritical and turning against their own policies!

Fingerprinting is a good idea, you can stop alot of basic crime by doing so. Plus just imagine the scope for suddenly getting lots and lots of fingerprints!! I would imagine there would be a few unsolved crimes suddenly solved too!! Those that cry human rights should put themselves in the place of people that have been victims of crimes that have been committed but unsolved etc. If it helps makes a more secure and safer nation to live in, then I am in favour!!

Oh and to follow the original post, its not mandatory to have the child use their fingerprints. I’m sure that the schools see it as a way of making the use of the school facilities more fun. What else do they think the school will do with a childs fingerprint? A 7 year old is hardly likely to appear on crimewatch are they!! I think some things are blown way out of proportion at times.

If you think that taking finger prints is a way of stopping crime, have the police got yours? If not, do the decent thing and nip down to your local police station? No, why not?

Do you want an i.d card? Is finger printing young people the way of saying to them later in life, ah, its only something a little more than when you had your dannies done…

POLICE on the street tackle crime. How would getting someones finger print stop criminal behaviour?
