Family of mother who murdered brain-damaged son calls for law change
The family of a mother who was jailed for murdering her brain-damaged son with a heroin injection have called for the law to be changed.Frances Inglis, said she killed her son Thomas to end his suffering
Frances Inglis, 57, was given a life sentence for killing her 22-year-old son Tom after he sustained severe head injuries when he fell out of a moving ambulance.
Tom’s brother, Alex, speaking outside court, praised his mother for her “loving and courageous act” and called for a review of the law for people who kill as an “act of mercy”.
20 January, 2010 at 9:07 pm #429094i think its a case of drawing a line , where would this end if liency was showed , it could open a can of worms , i think thats the main fear, setting a precidence to give ppl a licence to do it
20 January, 2010 at 9:53 pm #429095An individual shouldn’t be allowed to play God, that said when I watched my dad dying we all prayed that his suffering would end and therefore I can sympathise with this woman. Watching someone you love fade and suffer is a hard thing and you stop thinking with clarity. However, I think assisted suicide should be allowed if it can be proved that it is the wishes of the person and a medical council agree. Suicide is no longer illegal, so why should someone who is life limited or has a severe affliction not be allowed to have someone help them to do it if they are unable to do it for themselves.
Death is always going to be a difficult subject. I do feel that this lady did the wrong thing in making the decision for herself but without walking a day in her shoes it is hard to pass a real judgement on how her life with her son was… lets face it he wasn’t the only one with the affliction.20 January, 2010 at 9:57 pm #429096Guilty on all counts………of desperate heart felt compassion, no doubt this boys life was taken the night of this pub disturbance, how tragic for this family.
As the law stands, i cant see any hazards to public safety, this sentence should be revoked…. :x20 January, 2010 at 9:59 pm #429097Still her son’s life not hers, obviously the difference between what he was and what he became was huge but does she know he wanted to die.
20 January, 2010 at 10:00 pm #429098We don’t know what Tom’s circumstances were. It just says brain damaged, but we don’t know how much he was in pain or discomfort.
It is wrong to take a life. But sometimes the advances in medicine mean that someone who shouldn’t have survived, is kept alive and suffering.
I won’t judge her because I do not know all the facts.
20 January, 2010 at 10:07 pm #429099Suppose it’s hard to judge, unless you’re in that situation!
In a way, I agree with Melody, an individual shouldn’t be allowed to play God! But then, on the other hand, she did play God, by bringing him into the World! Not exactly the same, but you can see my point!
Thing is, if he was severely Brain – Damaged, then the Doctors would have decided soon enough, what this boys fate was to be!
I know of a family, who’s son was involved in a tragic incident, which left him Brain-Damaged, and they were told that his Life-Support would have to be switched off. They said that as they were conversing about this, his eyes were filling up, so he obviously must have understood what was going to happen, despite his state/condition.
Personally, I couldn’t do it – But, I’m not in that situation, who knows how I would feel/react if I were to be faced with a decision like that!!
20 January, 2010 at 10:10 pm #429100Its very true that to take a life cannot be justified but, in terms of the law, again i say there is no threat to the public, this women will live with this for-ever no doubt…. the thought of taking the life of your own child is a very disturbing situation, this women in my opinion is in great need of support not punishment…. i for one, as a member of the public would have no fears if this women were to be released on compassionate grounds. As has been said, i dont think we are privvy to all facts here. My opinion is after all, on the face of it. Of course it was wrong to take this boys life away, an act this woman clearly could not come to terms with. Lets hope truth and true justice will take full command here.
20 January, 2010 at 10:17 pm #429101And the next one who decides it’s best to end someone’s life and the one after that ? where do we stop. Her son yes, and a tragedy and heartbreaking for her, it wasn’t her decision to make, which makes it sound clinical and i have no doubt it wasn’t for her, but still there has to be “measures”
20 January, 2010 at 10:24 pm #429102Of course, you are correct, clearly this woman has become disturbed and no amount of prison life will change that in terms of justice to the public and on behalf of the public, the jury in this case were obviously not swayed by her defence, again only being in posession of all the circumstances can give a correct understanding of what really occurred.
