Now, Im one of these guilty hypocritical meat eaters. I hate seeing slaughter, but love my roast and eat grilled meat most nights of the week and treat myself to the occasional burger.
But whenever I see an animal slaughtered, especially a young one on tv Im in bits! I cannot help it. It must be a maternal thing or something, I dont know.
But these baby goats at such a young age and their floppy ears really got me. Not to mention mr double barreled name’s baby chicks that only have a live span of 39 days (factory farmed).
How do you all feel about the whole thing? Should they keep the animals alive for a bit longer… even though they are destined for slaughter?
One point that interested me was the chef. He tried the young goat and said he could not serve it in a restaurant, and there was nothing wrong with lettiing it live to at least 12 months (18 months = adult = meat no good).
I’ve flirted with vegetarianism alot through my life, never sticking to it as the smell of bacon would always allure me back in.
It’s natural and a very good part of a stable diet. I no longer feel guilty, if they weren’t farmed they wouldn’t be here at all.9 January, 2008 at 2:41 pm #302523I was a vegetarian for almost four years, and when I met my present boyfiend he bought me a quorn burger from Maccies (MacDonalds) and It was absoutley gorgeous, untill that is he later told me it was a real chicken burger, I felt sick later on but then realised that I had still enjoyed it and from that moment on I stopped feeling guilty and became a ‘meat eater again.
But personally, I still have high standards of how chickens, cows, etc… should be treated before they are slaughtered. It is only right for them to be surrounded by good living conditions – it makes sense. If they are healthy and happy the meat will be good quality.
I have saw a few programmes were animals have been slaughtered, and I had to turn over. I couldnt stand watching it, and I remember feeling alittle sick at the time. But If I was to eat a chicken burger now, It probably wouldnt pop into my head, not unless of course it happened to be on the TV at the same time.

I think we all know that nothing likes to be killed no matter how well its looked after or how happy its life is, when I think about it, the worst life is, the happier they are to die.

yes,i will say, i dont mind chewing on a leg of lamb, even if i have seen the creature leaping around the moors a couple of weeks previous, i just prefer the meat to have eaten naturally, as oposed to being force fed. and not to mention the injecting of salt water and antibiotics for a better looking flesh.
i dont think its too barmy an idea ?

10 January, 2008 at 11:05 pm #302531Its not good. Baby lambs of 5-6 weeks old “milk lambs an apparent delicacy. Taken from their mother today who is still in milk and will be pining (they are normally at least double that age).
The first two were tiny and one tried to run away (I was willing it to!). They put the stunner on its head and it didnt fully work (thats when I started ) so they very quickly shot it in the head. They then chose that techinque for the rest of them as there must have been a problem. Even then it still didnt seem the first one died as fast as the rest.
This age of meat thing is all wrong. Its going to mess with the heads and bodies of the mothers of these animals, thus not producing properly in the future.
I need my head testing for watching my programs but Im not one to buy my head in the sand. I like to know the process of where my dinner has come from. :?
