First most of the new systems are find, I am happy to see that people are moving away from gas heating.
There are a few new gas boilers that make electricity has well has heating your home.
But I do have a few issues about passive solar heating, manly the cost. There no point in spending 15-20k on solar heating if you are only going to save about £100-200 per year and the life span of the panels is only about 15 years. They do need to be clean once a year if you live in place like Brighton with a seagull problem.
I don’t see the point of installing large amounts of solar panels on homes. They’re not very efficient and can cause some major problems with roofs such has undue stress on the roofs supports.
At home I use a ground source heat pump and under floor heating, with a small solar panel to pre heat my hot water system. But you can use the same system with your radiators.
Most of the hot water is a “on demand” which means its electric and using the solar panel to pre heat the water to about 9-12 C does save a lot of energy. (A bit like putting hot water in your kettle).
My home heating costs are about a £1 per week, but I did spend about 8k on it.
Installing is not cheap and those of you who move every few years shouldn’t dream of wasting money on it.
In the winter you can’t turn it off because its not like gas heating, the house takes about 4-5 days to warm up. I would say to anyone thinking about green heating, its not cheap and they are still working on it.
For the time being try and get your old boiler service once a year and when you replace your old boiler think how long you are going to stay in that house before you go too mad on green heating.
If you need any advice just post and I will try and answer any questions you may have.

Can you explain why then, I moved into a brand spanking new build last May and my electricity bill has gone from 35 quid a month to 105?
I think I have the answer goonybint
When they say “energy saving” what they really mean is that its SOOOOO expensive to heat that you have less money to spend on luxuries and socialising, which in turn means you have to walk about less which therein saves YOU energy
But I can see why you would have naively thought it meant it saved on heating energy lol
19 September, 2007 at 9:39 pm #288136I only allow the heating on 4 days a year total, spilt over about 8 days. Half here half there. I have energy saving bulbs like everywhere.
Thats what letting British Gas control your electric does for you. WTF do they know about electricity??!! Its all in the name!
Im not allowed to change suppliers till I catch up the defecit either

You could always collect up all the energy saving things and see if they burn, if they do then that would cut your heating costs dramatically lol
20 September, 2007 at 1:06 am #288138Sharonooner what kind of heating do you have in your home?
Did you have an old economy 7 night meter in your old home? (white meter)
Was your bill at your old house paid up to date?
I think what has happen here is what happens to most new homebuyers; sharonooner has been bill for electric used by the house builder.
Has we all know you can’t move into a house without a meters, and there often in stalled months before you move in.
So all the builder’s plug there power tools, radios, microwaves etc, into household supply and use electric.
The supply company then read the meter about 3 months after you have move in and you get the bill. You will sometimes find they have charge you for fitting the new meter too.
Energy prices were high last winter and British Gas is not one of the cheaper suppliers.
20 September, 2007 at 5:44 pm #288139A company did try to sting us for the builders bills, but we sorted that.
We carried over some deficit from our old house, but British gas used to let you pay over the year. They have stopped this now and will not allow negative balances.
But my bills just wont go down lol!! n’mind.
As soon as I am in credit I will just change suppliers.

A hot one.
GSH. I think its one of those dual boiler thingys in the kitchen, that controls the heating and hot water. Great big box on the wall.
20 September, 2007 at 8:15 pm #288142So you have gas for heating?
Can you turn all your radiator valves down to “3”
When the temp reaches 21C, they should turn off the radiator and save you money.
