I think what the government is trying to do is get people back to work.
Sickness benefit covers things from alcohol abuse to bad backs, mental illness to transplants.
It’s a general term that covers lots of long-term illness.
So you have to ask the question, if someone is depressed, should they be sat at home all day?
If someone is waiting for a liver transplant, are they unable to work?
I think if you have the chance to work, you should.
People on sickness benefit make up reasons why they can’t work, it’s about time we gave them reasons to work.
Most illness cost money to treat; health works are not free, why not hand out a bit of money to keep people on sickness benefit happy, withdraw treatment and right them off?
Why are we spending money on treatment for people who will never work again?

I agree about the depression, sitting at home all day can only make it worse, although being at work isnt the answer either. Counselling is probably their best bet, or failing that some good old fashioned exercise to stimulate the brain chemicals which make you feel happier.
As for the liver transplant comment, of course a person cant work if they are ill enough to need a new liver for gods sake!
Terminally ill people who have worked hard all their lives and paid national insurance are entitled to treatment, otherwise whats the point in paying national insurance in the first place if you cant rely upon it in your time of need. As for people who have never done a days work through sheer laziness, they shouldnt be entitled to free treatment!

23 November, 2007 at 7:45 am #293496I am not sure what “terminally ill” means anymore. The “terminally ill” people I see on TV are running “fun runs” or walking around the world.
Has anyone heard of anyone with a mental illness being cured? I know that it can be control with drugs in some cases, but what’s the point in spending money on controlling the problem if there going to be sat at home all day?
I am sure that if you need any kind of transplant, you would need full time hospital care? But if you don’t and you spend 5 years waiting for your new organ, there must be something you can do? I am sure people on the transplant waiting list are still having sex.
There lots of part time jobs around, the only real problem is that people feel they can’t take jobs that they feel are below them.
Sickness benefit should be a short-term benefit, not a career move.
