The government hopes to cut the number of people on incapacity benefit by introducing a new tougher test.
It aims to end “sick-note Britain” with the assessments, which could see the number of annual claimants fall by 20,000.

But people who receive the benefit have contacted the BBC News website to argue that the government’s clampdown is unfair.

One such person says he is desperate to get back to work, but has found it impossible to get a job.

David Le Compte, 51, has been on incapacity benefit since he broke his leg in three places, two years ago.

    ‘Less than useless’

Before the accident he was a truck driver and tried to get back to work after being signed off.

“I tried straightaway to get back to work, to do something light. The moment I did I was hounded by the Department of Work and Pensions who wanted to take me to court because I had earned four pence over what I was allowed.

“They made such a fuss that the agency who was giving me the work wouldn’t touch me with a barge pole.”

Mr Le Compte, from Thetford in Norfolk, says he was then sent to an interview, where he was asked what he would like to do as he could no longer drive trucks.

After saying he could perhaps work in an office he was sent details of truck driver jobs in Scotland, Leeds and Manchester.

When ministers talk about ‘sick note Britain’ I don’t think they know what they are talking about

    ‘Tougher’ work tests for disabled

Following another interview he was sent information sheets on how to become a truck driver.

“I have found the DWP and job centres less than useless, they’re non existent. They do nothing,” he said.

“I have been so inactive for the past two years that my condition has got worse, because I have been unable to get a job.”

Mr Le Compte said he has applied for 110 jobs but because he has been unemployed and on incapacity benefit for two years, no one will employ him.

    Disadvantaged

“I have been for another medical and have been signed off for another two years, but all I have is £80 a week – you can’t live on that.

“When ministers talk about ‘sick note Britain’ I don’t think they know what they are talking about.”

Dr David Blowers worked as an assessor on the appeal panels for more than two years and says the test system does not work.

“I have seen people getting benefit who frankly shouldn’t have received it and others who were not getting it who were frankly so sick it was a surprise they had come in.

“We have to find a way to help the people who want to work, introducing a new test like this is not the way.

“Many people with a disability are saying they would like to work and this is not possible, these are the people who would be disadvantaged by any new test. This is unconscionable to me.”

There are now one million fewer people on benefits and numbers on incapacity benefit are falling for the first time in decades, a spokesman for the Department of Work and Pensions said.

The government will be providing people with a more tailored approach to giving them the skills they need to get jobs, he added.

“We want to give people exactly the help that will make them able to compete for jobs whether it be more skills or building up their confidence for example. This approach will help more people off benefits and into work.”

On the news they said they was hoping to get upto 50% of the people off benefits, I guess JC is gonna be dead soon, you lazy fckin spongers.

    Its all good.

who exactly are you calling lazy scroungers ???
if you think being disabled is easy you ought to try the physical type as youre obviously well trained in the mental type. i was disabled 7 years ago when a violent offender training programm in self defence went wrong. it was no ones fault and a freak accident where four discs in my spine collapsed when someone knelt on my back as we practiced breakaway maneouvers. i was bed ridden for a year and then had major surgery to rectify the injury. i was then left to try and get back on mt feet and learn to walk again. being didabled is not an easy option for most its a way of life. personally i do not live on benefits of any kind and am lucky to have an independent income. so before you shoot off at the mouth calling disabled people scroungers do yer homework and keep yer trap shut.ive worked full time until recently when i semi retired as i can afford to do so. the people who are scroungers are those who work cash in hand while claiming benefit of any kind. they are scroungers and they should be barred from claiming any benefit ever again. you go to your local assessmant clinic and see how many pyjama wearing foreigners are there with their bmw or merc [with disabled badges] there are befor yopu start on ordinary folk who cant work for being disabled.

Oh i’m sorry did i mention you wasp? did i say you are a sponge? i don’t recall saying so.
We all know there is there is spongers out there who claim benefits and just scamming the system. People like yourself sound totally genuine case, and it is meant for people like yourself in mind and rightly so. But the type i mean is like was mentioned on the news, 1 guy was seen swinging his kid around freely no problems, 5 minutes later when he had a asessment for claiming this benefit, he had his arm in a sling and claiming he could barely move.

My second point was there is a large amount of JC users claiming benefits, and it’s gonna be empty soon cos some of them are just fckin sponges.

Now as you jumped straight on the band wagon defending yourself, when nobody even mentioned you, i can only presume you felt a sense of guilt for being in that position yourself, not that you should.

its about time the government got tougher when it comes to handing out benefits. Of course there are genuine people out there who deserve the money they get, but theres also countless scumbags who lie their way through these assessments because they are too lazy to get off their backsides and get a job. I used to have a neighbour who claimed he couldnt work because of his bad back (that old chestnut.) It didnt stop him spending a full day laying slabs on his front garden though…funny how he miraculously recovered isnt it?!

If you see anyone doing the same, capture the ba stard on your mobile phone and send it in to the fraud department

who died and appointed you the moral police you pathetic tw*t i feel no guilt whatsoever as i said before i dont claim benefit of any kind. as you said in your post jc users are scroungers. not the case, but even if it were what the fek is it to do with you?

People collect ss benefits for a wide variety of reasons that does not automatically mean they are scroungers ? try blaming the drug dealers and their pathetic users before others most people with severe drug dealers ar on benefit, if they recieved no benefit [the way id go ] they couldnt spend it on drink and drugs.

These people and a lot like them should be given vouchers for food and household goods only, and the person named on the vouchers is the only beneficiary, id would be requested.

They are scroungers. people who are working such as the vast majority of foreign scroungers, who came here purely for the benefit beenie are scroungers, people who are either genuineley ill odr disabled are not.

The government just keep dropping the disability drain in the hat to get small minded morons off the immigration bandwagon and onto the thinking of bloody english scroungers

The fact that you buy into it says lots to me. although im no better as i bang on about immigrants and muslims scrounging but i genuineley believe they are.when this sheite government stops paying out for thousands and thousands foreign claimaants and rids us of them. then they can start on the long tern here.

They could for instance stop carers allowance for asian families who claim for up to 2 people each wholst all living at the same address.
