Do you honestly believe the majority of the Labour party went into politics for any other readon than topromote a more equal and caring society?
The problem is, that once they arrived in politics they realised they were dealing with a ignorant and apathetic electorate who want it all but vote vote for tax cuts.

No, initially, most labour members thought they could make a difference, and thats a good thing. This was the case many moons ago.
Since around the time of the invention of the CD, political motives have become a more “pull the ladder up jack, sod the rest” attitude.
Without core political stability (which new labour and their conservative liberals havn’t got) with long term policy, all you do is think of today, and worry about tomorrow, next week.
How many prodomanent indigenous people’s vote new labour? I dont think quite many, but the vast amount of foreign/non white people do. The more you let in, the more votes you will recieve. The more you pander to, the same thing.
There are many ways of wasting tax payers money to buy a vote. Another is encouraging the unemployed to go on the sick, easy life. Theres still three million unemployed, 1.5 million of them are on the sick…

They get what they deserve. Apathy!

We live in a capialist country. The government is judged on its handling of the economy. The economy has NEVER before shown such a sustained period of growth and stability! We also have the most stable currency in the world.

When new labour broke out of the asylum in 1997, briton was £50,000,000 Billion good.
Some political commentators have guesstimated were upto £900,000,000 Billion down.
Atleast we still own 50% of Washington DC…

I’m tired of hearsay. Post a credible link to back up any figures/statistics else don’t bother posting them.

National debt is much like any other sort of debt. If you owe £30,000 and you earn £15,000 a year then it may be of some concern to you. On the other hand, if you earn £millions then it would be rather less of a worry.
We all have an understanding of our own personal debt, which may be many times our yearly income – say through mortgages, car finance deals, overdraft, credit card bills – whatever. What matters is our ability to make the payments. It’s no different for governments.
So, national debt too is best expressed as a proportion of the nation in question’s income or Gross Domestic Product. In 1997, when Labour came to power, in Britain it was 44% of our GDP. The figure fell to a low of 29.8% in February 2002 but has climbed since. The Treasury’s prediction for the end of March 2007 is 37.5%: still below the figure the Chancellor inherited.* By comparison, the US is currently running at somewhere over 60%.* France were still over 65% in 2005,*, so were Germany* while Japan were running at nearly 160%.*
So, as a major trading nation, in this respect at least, we’re doing ok. How much importance should be attached to this data as a measure of the rude health of nations, though, I think is open to question.
26 September, 2006 at 8:47 pm #237215The PC credentials of public sector bureaucrats have given us multilingual forms to fill and multilingual instructions on how to fill them in. Paragraphs in Gujerati, Urdu, Vietnamese, Arabic and, of course, Welsh, abound but where are the translations into Polish, Hungarian, etc.?
