Forget Cool Britannia: any last vestiges of national pride appeared to be dead and buried this week as bloggers lined-up to condemn the UK. And what was the final nail? Chocolate.
“Welcome to the United Kingdom where everything, and I mean everything, is for sale,” wrote sinisterfootwear, condemning the decision by the Cadbury’s board to recommend a £12bn deal from US group Kraft.
“Only Britain sells itself short like this,” said damandblast. “The shareholders have noregard for heritage, British jobs, respect or integrity!”
“Why do I get the feeling that a debt-laden company taking on more debt to acquire another is going to end badly for everyone not able to trouser millions as a result of the sale?” asked dippy.
“Kraft bought Terry’s in York with very, very similar promises,” warned MrsBadger. “Sixteen months later, the factory has been relocated to Poland, all staff are redundant and we’re getting more unsaleable apartment blocks on the former site. Brilliant! Good luck Bourneville and Cadbury’s staff from York …you’re going to need it.”“I wonder what George Cadbury, the religious (Quaker) founder, would have made of this mercenary deal, made in the narrow interests of the shareholders alone ?” asked tomnorton. “‘Money talks,’ they say – yes, and money impoverishes, too.”
22 January, 2010 at 4:25 pm #429247And the Tories show their true colours… Long live Maggie
A heartless Tory was branded a disgrace yesterday for calling thousands of Cadbury’s workers fighting for their jobs “whingers”.
Mp Bill Wiggin, who went to Eton with David Cameron, said staff should stop moaning about the Kraft takeover which could lead to huge redundancies.
The ex-banker, who has a Cadbury’s factory in his constituency, said they should just knuckle down and get on with it if they wanted to stay employed.
The Leamington MP said he had heard workers complaining about the US firm’s takeover. He said: “I worry that by sending out such negative signals it puts people’s jobs more at risk.
“No-one wants to hire a whinging workforce when you could have a positive upbeat one.” The remarks by the MP, dubbed “Bungalow Bill” in the Commons, caused fury. Unite’s Jennie Formby said: “Cadbury’s workers are campaigning to protect jobs – it’s not whinging, its standing up for their livelihoods, homes and families.
“Mr Wiggin is a disgrace to his constituents and has done Cadbury’s workers a great disservice. This is a classic example of the uncaring Conservative.
23 January, 2010 at 2:01 pm #429248I did hear on the radio that RBS, now largely owned by British taxpayers, lent US company Kraft money to mount the successful bid to take over Cadburys. Shocking!
23 January, 2010 at 2:10 pm #429249Why do Cadbury want to sell

Yes … absolutely shocking indeed. They should have stepped back and allowed another bank to lend the money to Kraft – that would have been the right thing to do eh?
