31 August, 2006 at 7:47 am #238543We already pay for having our rubbish collected through council tax.
If they introduce a ‘pay as you throw system’ it will just mean an increase in illegal dumping of rubbish. There is enough of a problem with fly tipping already without offering an incentive!
Others who don’t want to break the law will have rubbish heaps in their gardens and everyone will be lighting bonfires to burn packaging etc.
If there is ever a case for compulsorily charging everyone for a service and then providing it universally, with no further charge at time of use, surely rubbish collection is that case.
31 August, 2006 at 9:42 am #238544I agree with you entirely Bassingbourne. This is yet another example of us paying twice for a service, not unlike the proposed polls on roads for which we already pay tax.
The subject of refuse-collection is a particular bugbear of mine. As I pay through the nose for the removal of rubbish via my council-tax, I fail to see why I should be expected to filter through my detritus to separate it into different categories for different bins [here in my part of the country we have green bins for certain household waste..blue bins for another.] This should be the responsibility of those PAID to do the job. I have a good friend who gave up teaching to drive a bin lorry. He isn’t allowed to take any extra bin-bags or bins with the “wrong” rubbish in ’em or any rubbish atall on days with a “Y” in ’em and the council is piling in the money and the streets are piling up the craap! :x :x :x31 August, 2006 at 9:48 am #238545Everyone will just dump their rubbish in alleyways, as they already pay thru the nose for refuge collection. The rats and vermin will certainly love that, and there will be really awful ilnesses again like years ago.
31 August, 2006 at 10:33 am #238546I hate the bloody new bins with a vengeance
We have Green bins for usual rubbish and Blue bins for “green” rubbish – if you know what I mean – ffs they cant even get the colours right
Now a proposed new bin “Brown” for green – as in garden waste ffs – although – you have to pay for this one
so no doubt people will be nicking Brown bins before longAnywya back to the story – the collections are now blue bin (green) one week , green bin the next week
So if you say have a chicken the day after the green bin collection – the carcass is in the bin for nearly 2 weeks – in summer no matter how many plastic bags you wrap it up in – the bloody flies will get to it – then you have a bin full of maggots – which the council will probably refuse to empty
So we now have a maggot bin (black) which is collected on the 29th FebruaryI make at least one trip a week to the local tip so that my bins dont overflow
31 August, 2006 at 10:42 am #238547Where I live we have new people moved in, and they dont have a wheeley bin and have been told that the price is £25 to get one of course these people wont pay that so leave their rubbish in bags outside for cats and vermin to get into. Then the bin men dont pick up extra bags anyhow so onless they get bins the problem will surely worsen. Fancy having to pay for a bin with the council tax rates so high anyhow.
31 August, 2006 at 1:26 pm #238548I used to be keen on recycling but now it’s gone too far. We have a weekly recycling collection including little brown bins for waste food and a box for paper, bottles and tins. All fine, except perhaps the rotting food! But the problem is the main bin collection is now evert 2 weeks instead of every week. There are only 3 of us and the wheelie bin is always full after 2 weeks – bigger families must have problems.
I also take garden waste and cardboard to the tip. There, they also collect plastic bottles for recycling and I used to take them up there. But the onset of recycling fatigue means the plastic bottles now go in the wheelie bin. Waste food is next!
31 August, 2006 at 1:49 pm #238549Theres five of us. We have a black bin for normal household rubbish, green ones for garden waste and clear sacks for tin cans and another clear sack for cardboard. On a week like this one, when there is a bank holiday, the collection is always a day late. And Drivel is quite right, in summer it,s bloody revolting. For 2 weeks your rubbish sits in the wheelie bin, and it doesnt matter how much you wrap it up, the feckin flies always find a way in and it bloody stinks.
31 August, 2006 at 7:08 pm #238550I live in a flat without any outside space so can’t have a wheelie bin of any colour. I also don’t drive & the nearest tip is 6 miles away so rubbish removal is a nightmare. I get delivered 2 rolls of ‘pink’ sacks & each sack is much smaller than the average black sack I could buy at the local pound shop. I only get enough to use two of these a week.
By the time I have cooked meals from scratch so all peelings/meat etc are in plus other non recycling rubbish, unused food, cat litter etc. it is a health hazard to have it in the house so I do have to put it out early. I haven’t had anyone moaning yet but it is only a matter of time.
If I use all the bags before the next lot are delivered I have to go to the council offices and pay nearly £20 for another roll! But recycling bags are only available from the council offices . They will only give one roll per person & they open Mon – Fri 9.30 – 4.30. How are you supposed to recycle when you can’t even get the f’in bags?
Its about time this government put people before profits. If we can afford an illegal war we can quite easily afford decent rubish collection.
