A perfect example of trying to please everyone…

Same-sex couples want to have the right to marry…quite right too, let’s give it to them.

Oh hold on a minute, some of them might want to marry in church…not sure about that, let’s ask the church what they think.

Oh heck, the Christian churches don’t want it but the Quakers, Unitarians and Liberal Jews do…I know, let’s make it opt-in, churches don’t have to marry same sex couples but they can if they want to….they can be innies or outties, it’s up to them.

Hmmm the C of E and C of W still aren’t happy…I know, let’s just make it illegal for them to marry same sex couples, then there won’t be any doubt amongst the happy-clappy vicars on what they can and can’t do and no messy confrontations and the church can keep on doing what they’ve always done which is pleasing themselves (oooh err vicar, more tea?)…they’re all outties.

There, that should keep everyone happy…what do you mean what about Christian same-sex couples? What about them? They can go use the Registry office can’t they? Oh…you mean they wanted to get married in the eyes of god? Oh well, you can’t please all of the people all of the time *shrugs shoulders*

    What a farce!

I agree Jen…. what a farce! If two people love each other why cant they just share that with everyone and in the church if they are believers…. beats me?

I think it’s the fact that it’s actually being made illegal to be married in the C of E or C of W that irks me…so if a Christian same sex couple do manage to find vicar who is sympathetic, he can’t marry them anyway.

It’s the Government trying to keep everyone happy but failing dismally – same sex couples won’t be 100% happy as there are still restrictions on where they can marry, the Church won’t be 100% happy as they don’t like the Government making rules on marriage which they seem to think is their sole domain and there are still place where same sex couples can get married when they’d rather they didn’t marry at all…oh it all makes me want to grrrrrrrrrrr!

Surely all the Government had to do was say yes we will allow same sex marriages, however we will give those licensed to conduct marriages the right to decide whether or not they will marry same sex couples; if they are not happy to conduct the wedding then they should direct the couple to someone who will. Just like doctors who are anti-abortion can refuse to refer a woman for abortion but will direct her to a doctor who will be sympathetic. It’s not exactly rocket science…is it?

……….and they wonder why numbers in the congregation are dwinding

Yes, Jen, the govt have got themselves in a mess trying to please everyone.

Apparently, the majority support for gay marriage is quite high among women in the UK.

The interesting thing is why the Church opposes it; and it comes down to the same reason there has been such opposition to women bishops.

    It’s all in Scriptcher.

Paul in particular, denounced nancy boys and ‘unnatural’ sexual practices with the same passion as he wanted women to accept their natural subordination to men, and with the same piety with which he told slaves not only to be happy with their owners but to work harder for them.

The ferocious Old Testament is packed with warnings about naughties, including going with barnyard fowl – what were those people up to??? But it seems to have been all right to give over a daughter in h early teens to a mass gang-bang n order to avoid the disgrace of your male guest being defiled in Genesis ch19, vs8

Now what did Jesus say about gays?? Hmmm..looking and looking and looking to find something – but nothing. Jesus said nothing about gays.

We are all equal in the eyes of God…shame the same can’t be said for the eyes of the so-called men of God.

It’s a shame things cannot be simple.

In my eyes if you want a religious marriage ceremony and you are gay you should be allowed. Religious Institutions should move with times.

However I suppose in some religions moving with the times would mean re writing religion. Is that right? I do not know the ins and outs of any religion in depth enough to know what the stands are exactly on gay marriages. I do not even know how the Sikh Religion stands on it. My mum thinks there are no gays in the Indian Community, bless her

Like I said, I wish things could be simple.

You would think so, wouldn’t you.

Evidently UKIP is seeking to make this an embarrassment for the government. I thought they were about keeping us out of Europe, but it seems their real interests are anti-immigrant, anti-women and now anti-gay. Thank goodness we are starting to know where they stand.

I can’t get excited about gay marriage one way or the other. Civil partnerships give all the same legal rights, but if people want the “marriage” label and to be able to declare their love before their community and their God, that is fine by me.

Gotta ask why some people are so opposed? How will it effect their lives? We don’t take on every 2000 year old cultural convention to make our religion more real, so why this one?

As Scep said Jesus didn’t go round dissing gays – he concentrated on corrupt commercial interests and the falsely religious and called upon them to love and support their fellow human beings. Funny how people try to use the message of the Gospels for hate and prejudice.

Don’t know how i missed this thread before.

It’s confuddled, alright. What a palaver. In my opinion state and church should be distinctly separated, and the Government should think twice before trying to tell the church what to do.

If a in institution feels unable to recognize a gay marriage then surely that’s up to them. I think it shows a clear lack of the understanding of modern society, but churches have hardly been known for being aligned with the zeitgeist. Not recognizing a gay union is not the same as expelling gay members of your congregation (which would be discriminatory). Let the believers vote with their feet.
