Hi, I am to build a gaming computer for my brother in law (my sister is footing the parts bill) so i would appreciate any input on the spec, any of you gamers come across something good to add to a build ? the system will be built on performance not looks so case windows, LEDs, Cathodes wont come into it, just pure grunt, my parts list so far —
MoBo, Intel Extreme (Bad Axe) D975bx-304 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £152.69 Including VAT – OR Gigabyte GA_965P_DQ6 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £152.69 Including VAT
CPU, Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 “LGA775 Conroe” 2.40GHz (1066FSB) 252.57 Including VAT (looking at bench marks for this CPU nothing comes close)
Graphics Card, BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) £234.94 Including VAT OR ATI Radeon X1900 ***Crossfire Edition*** 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)£252.57 Including VAT (this card will go very well with the Bad Axe MoBo)

Thankyou for the endorsement Poet, sadly methinks Cybercat has forgot more than I know about computers.
19 August, 2006 at 10:08 am #235761:lol: Im sure that’s not the case Ow£n, i do look at peoples PCs for some extra £££ and i find PC problems tend to follow set rules, its rare that something completely new comes up but saying that PCs are forever evolving as with the Poets computer very few had 1GB ram 8 years ago, to day i see Motherboards with 2 and 4GB installed, 2 Graphics Cards (cross fireing) and i have see at a show 2 Motherboards in 1 case and i still cant work out the wireing on that one !!! bloody nightmare
22 August, 2006 at 5:43 pm #235762k, the 975x bad axe MB you selected is a good board but not yet available in the UK but should be soon, the gigabyte is a very good board also but more suited to the lower end conroe chips.
RAM wise the best choice is this GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel. This ram performs as good if not better than comparable specced g.skill or corsair ram and is actually cheaper at moment.
PSU wise this is what i advise for this system: Seasonic S12 500W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply (CA-001-SS)
for your optical drives i recommend either samsung or lite-on drives to match your case colour.
Go for the ATI GFX card as currently the only supported dual GFX card chipsets for conroe are crossfire compatible so there is another upgrade path for more performance in the future.
Case-wise i would not go for a gaming type case as these are generally quite noisy but instead i woudl reccommend this fantastic case: Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Silver Aluminium Midi-Tower Case
For the HDD this series are currently the best performers out apart from 10k rpm raptors and are also very quiet: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB ST3400620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache – OEM (HD-083-SE)
I hope this is of some help for you, all these items can be purchased from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ which has pretty much the cheapest component prices and the best selection of quality hardware in the UK.

maxtor is a fast budget drive and has 16mb of cache , much faster.
set hard disk up into 3 partitions
20 gb is for windows only
2x 115gb partition , put the virtual memory on the d: drive , the machine works faster
also install games onto d drive .infact if only windows is on c: partition you get less crashes (i have none)you also don’t have to defrag as often and defrags are quicker
any way have fun looking at list , this lot is on http://www.ebuyer.com
