Scep this morning, was reading poetry from one of his favourite poets and he didn’t even recognise or understand it, and he’s a bright guy. It’s all about expression and interpretation.
ahem, in the interests of literary accuracy,
it wasn’t a quotation from Wallace Stevens’s poetry.
It was from an essay called The Sacred Rider.
Prose , not poetry
I googled it, as advised by somebody.
Not that I would necessarily recognise many poems of his – he did write rather a lot.
But I find his prose pretty unreadable.
I did ask whether you’d read any books by Helen Vendler.
If you do actually like Stevens, I have a dvd of 1 hour on his work, seen biographically. It contains a lot of historical footage of Stevens himself, and awesome appearances by the magnificent poet, James Merrill,
