The Treaty of Maastricht was a disaster for unskilled workers in the UK. A wave of cheap labour from the EU cut wages by 1/2 within a few short years. It was so bad the National Minimum Wage Act was brought in and a raft of “in work” benefits. The idea that more workers would pay more tax to cover the cost was disparaged once the EU workers started leaving every 6 months for a two week “holiday” to avoid UK residence laws and tax. Just like many from the Republic of Ireland are still able to do.
Many companies are now reporting recruitment issues since the ending of freedom of movement. When you take a closer look at them you realize why: they built there business on cheap disposable labour. Or has we said in the old days ” the backs of the workers staving kids”.
Amazon, Sports direct and McDonalds to name but a few who common used “zero hour” temporary contracts paying minimum wage are having difficulty’s staffing. Its going to be hard for these company’s to argue for an increase in immigration numbers due to there history of UK tax avoidance.
Brexit was controversial but it may do more for the under 30’s than any government program ever did. Increasing wages, opportunities and forcing company’s to train staff once again.
Right now I’m just happy to see so many NHS non medical & local authorities staff get a better deal above the pittance the government is offering. Both used minimum wage zero hour agencies workers.
Who knows, if they stop of flow of medical staff too our nurses mite see a real increase above 3% joke of an offer they have now.

7 August, 2021 at 12:08 pm #1141245Governments also encouraged very rich people to come and live in the UK hoping for a trickle down economy where the rich investors would invest their time and money into business where they would make a profit and also create employment and the tax revenue would be a double whammy for the government taxes from the rich and taxes from the workers .
instead its become a trickle up economy where the rich avoid taxes by exploiting the loopholes with tricky dicky accountants and very expensive lawyers .They have reduced the working person to a number and the number is zero ….zero contracts zero hours and zero worth .So all the wealth is trickling up to the wealthy while the working classes languish and the government wondering which stealth taxes can we bring in to hit the workers that are already weighed down with cost of living and rents and trying to bring up a family
All i can see down the line is great civil unrest yes companies will be hard pressed to find people who will work for low wages big responsibility and listening to some petty boss shouting at them to work harder do more work longer hours etc etc you get the drift .
I dont know the answer but its a great discussion to have and to get it out in the open so hopefully the younger generation will see some hope and light and not feel like the marrow of their bones is been sucked out of them .
Love your posts fishy keep them coming
8 August, 2021 at 11:16 am #1141250Well Roz its a mix of neoliberalism
And Thatcherism.
These policy were aim at the rich. For those not part of the 1% of millionaires it was a bit of a bugger. On the one hand people loved cheap overseas goods being imported. On the other the loss of manufacturing and endless stream of low cost workers put many on the bread line.
Taxations a bit funny too. Just over 40% of the UK don’t pay any income tax.

If taxation goes up too much like in America right now…. the rich just jump on there private jet and sod off else where. And lets be honest here the numbers are small… about 2000?
So our focus needs to be on businesses that cant just up sticks and move to the Bahamas. Its the only real way to tax the rich. And that’s what most governments around the world are trying to do.

40 years of neoliberalism & Thatcherism reforms need reversing. The biggest obstacle will be us…….. we’re use to buying cheap imported goods. Just think of the riots if Primark shuts down. I dreg to think what would happen if curry’s stop selling cheap computers and big screen tv’s

3 September, 2021 at 5:06 pm #1141623You forgot to add the increasing costs bit Fishy or haven’t you noticed. Describe the whole picture mate, not just a blinkered view. Increasing wages = increasing costs = increasing inflation. The lower class are about to be fu cked again.
3 September, 2021 at 8:20 pm #1141627Low inflation only benefit’s the rich not the poor.

Better interest rates mean savers get a better deal and house prices rise slower. High inflation eats into mortgage repayments too.
