Well… not the greatest of matches, yet a final full of incident, with high and low drama. Over the seven matches or so methinks Italy deserved it – but France were certainly the better team for the 2nd half and for most of Extra Time tonight.

The Zidane episode was extraordinary
A man noted for his extreme coolness and nerve, who scored a deliciously cheeky penalty, who has graced the world stage with consumate professionalism… loses the plot.. Big Time :?
    What a tragedy :(

I have noticed in the past that in the absence of any truly outstanding teams – the two great grinding machines of either Italy or Germany usually win out – such was the case this time around.
Italy are worthy winners indeed.. A very solid unit… who relish the art of defending as much as Brazil do the art of attack.

    Congratulations to them.
    Commiserations France.

France lost 3 of their best penalty takers and that’s why Italy won. They were unworthy winners in my opinion, France was the only side that looked like scoring a 2nd goal before penalties.

I also disagree about there not being an outstanding team. Argentina were the best team in the tournament but their manager made a massive blunder in the game against germany and it cost them dearly. They were the side that looked most likely to win the cup.

every penalty of italys was un stopable

Italy beat germany, somthing argintina could’nt do, no excuses can be given, Italy were solid at the back, and organised.. just because they did’nt show attacking football, does not mean they did’nt deserve to be world champions

Yeah. I’d say Argentina’s big failing was when they were out of possession. All the decent teams caused them great bother. They only really handed out a whipping to the Serbs. I’d say any of the quarter finalists save the Ukraine could have won it if they’d started sparking like the French and the Italians managed to.

Overall, I think the Italians were worthy winners. Keeping your cool is part of the game and Zizou didn’t manage it.

Italy stole the cup. France were robbed. Argentina only lost because their manager, Pekerman (an appropriate name), took off Riquelme and Crespo, didn’t bring on Saviola or Messi and tried to hang on to a 1 goal lead. The manager blew it for argentina not the players.

France was the better team in the final, they should have got a second penalty and the Italian equalizer probably shouldn’t have stood. It was daylight robbery.

    Penalties suck! :(

If it’s a draw after extra time they should each take a player off. Then after every five minutes of play, each take another player off untill a goal is scored.

It’s not my idea but I think it’s a good one.

I agree , the result was soooo unfair. A total travesty.

I think that irrespective of the actual scores etc the rules should allow the eventual winner to be pre-selected before the competition actually starts.

Then if the ‘winner’ manages to lose against any of the other sides, you reverse all the referee’s decisions, dis-allow all goals scored against them and so on so that they can be seen to win against all the odds.

Italian players are always diving or cheating in some way. That’s why the non-Italians in the stadium were booing when Italy went up to collect the trophy, because they saw how Materazzi orchestrated Zidane’s sending off. I can’t remember a world cup final where the winning team was booed before and I can’t remember one where most people thought the winners were second best on the day.

Italy were lucky that their equalizer wasn’t disallowed, that France wasn’t awarded a second penalty, that Vieira and Henry had to be subbed and that Materazzi provoked Zidane into being sent off. They took good penalties but there was only 1 team in it from the start of the second half onwards.

“Fortunata Italia” would be a better title for this thread.
