And exactly what power does the monarch in this country have?
The post of Prime Minister has more power than the Queen and her successors will ever have.
She pays lip service to the will of Parliament. She is just a token Head of State and a bloody expensive one at that.
She has the power to dissolve Parliament.
It’s purely ceremonial and she will never do it of her own accord She will only do that on the request of the outgoing prime minister.
If it were true the monarch had such power then why didn’t Edward VIII dissolve parliament instead of being forced to abdicate by it?

Do you contribute to the upkeep of the Royal sroungers or do you pay towards the French coffers?

23 May, 2012 at 10:48 pm #497271I contribute to the upkeep of the Royal Family…I consider the 69p that it cost me last year to be money well spent.

Perhaps the so called “royal family” should become a registered Charity so the public has the choice if they want to contribute to these parasites life of luxury.
I expect you’ll soon be having to pay more than 69p to keep them in the style to which they have become accustomed. At the moment we have no choice but to contribute. I suspect if it was voluntary then they wouldn’t be getting nearly as much.
Would you donate if they asked for £5 to £10 per month or would you rather spend it in your own family?
24 May, 2012 at 9:43 am #497273Yes I would pay £5-£10 a month.

The Royal Family are given approximately £36 million per year.
Compare that with the £280 million given to India each year in foreign aid and you might see another side to this debate. India don’t actually want (or need) foreign aid. Fact.
Also, bear in mind that approximately £130 million is given annually to MPs to cover their expenses. That’s 650 MPs who are lapping it up at the taxpayers’ expense. Again.
24 May, 2012 at 12:02 pm #497275Actually the cost of the Royal Family has dropped to 51p a year…hmmmmmm, let me think, what would I do with that 51p if they didn’t have it?
Of course, we could just stop paying for the Royals and let them keep the income from their land…around £235m of income that currently goes to the Treasury. In return they may also choose not to fulfil any of the Royal duties currently undertaken that bring money into the country in terms of tourist revenue and trade.
I assume that all the anti-royals will be working on the Jubilee day, and expect to be paid extra or have time off in lieu…I also assume that they will stick to their moral stance by refusing to work for any company whose trade has benefited from the Royals and also refuse to buy anything or have any dealings with any company that has benefitted in any way from the Royals.

And no doubt it would cost us money when the Irish head of state visits the UK.
