14 January, 2010 at 9:04 pm #427409Takes me back a bit …… saw some sh!t kicking bands back then. Saw a few fairly middle of the road stuff, new romantics, and bands where you were lucky if you came out of there without gob in your hair – and that was courtesy of the band members! Nice!
:D
Love the ruts!!! not heard that for ages …. excellent finds rubes 8) 8)
14 January, 2010 at 11:24 pm #427410I remember going to see a support band.. to the buzzcoks after Devoto left to join Magazine, and Pete Shelly beomming the RIGHTFUL ( IMHO) singer..
they were a clubbie band that played to the working class folks of working mens clubs one week and decided to go ” punk”.. my god it was laughable, ya seen where their wrangler flares has been taken in, and the cheeseloth shirts of auld hippies, they came on like 4 jesus’s, still in beards attempting to look the part. maaaan i was embarrased as i knew benny the bass player personally.. he used to reek of sandalwood and say ” hey man” a lot.how ignorant and ageist we all were bak then :)
14 January, 2010 at 11:31 pm #427411yet ^^^^ in saying that we used to go see a wee band in the euston tavern called depeche mode.. then they played in canning town, cos they had a fan base of 20 ! and mickey geggus of the cockerneee rejects offering anne and me a lift ! we didnt play ball and shag mediocre oi bands so we were dumped in the east end. we made it back to the cross.. and stuck to drinking with irishmen and singing songs of a sat night with an accodionist.
with messrs macgowan and stacey..15 January, 2010 at 8:17 pm #427412saw simply red at the hammersmith palais before they had their first number 1. Actually, reckon i saw a few before they were famous, but they were so unknown i had forgotten their names, so can’t really say I saw them!!!!
went to a few venues that were hit and happening at the time though….and the bands? some good, some bad and some just plain ugly!
What I love is that those times gave me a real desire to hear live music, and to this day without music my life would be so much the poorer. It is odd what gets my juices flowing…..but these days, lyrics are much more important to me than they used to be. I remember the days when a good pulsing bass rhythm was all that was needed!!!!
