and there, arc, you miss the point.

    Some threads do contain argument.

I do understand why you UKIP-types want to avoid argument in favour of abuse and cheap in-jokes. Much easier to whip up fear and anger for your own purposes than it is to engage in a rational argument. If there ais a killing attack in the UK, you’ll get really abusive to anyone who tries to reason things out.

No wonder you resort to this. Some at least of you have been calling for the UK to add its bit to the bombing in Syria and for boots on the ground. Somer says you have no balls if you don’t support this, and fantasises that everyone but Corbyn agrees with him (!!)

Irish Lucy (who is not UKIP – I actually have some time for this woman, but don’t ask me why coz I wouldnt be able to answer) speaks from comfort of women in Iraq who prefer death by bombing to rule by ISIS (surely another way?)

I’m not a pacifist. If anyone can show us all that you can eliminate ISIS by bombing…I’ll listen.

If anyone argues that bombing and boots on the ground can stop ISIS doing another Paris-style attack, I’ll listen very closely.

    But nobody has shown this.

People should grow up here. Easy for the armchair warriors to blow hard about briinging yet more death and misery to a war-torn area, and then prevent anyone tryng to flee with their families from moving to safety.

There are ways of defeating ISIS militarily, but you UKIP types just show a genuine callousness.

And also the MP’s of this great country are getting behind it. So lets just say viva la France, Spill the blood of your tormentors and spit in there faces. The Bible says an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.Grins and evil laugh

    Not going to work, Somer.

As in Iraq, they’ll win within minutes.

    And then the blood starts.

And it’s a six-dsided war. You’d be surprised. Easy to shout blood and create all sorts of blood-curdling images, but the reality is not likely to be as simple.

Cameron and Obama are not going to put boot on the ground. They’re not that stupid. It didn#’t win aainst al Qaueda in Iraq, and it was years before they stumble upon other tactics.

The MPs are NOT on side. Labur will be against, the SNP is likely to be against (unless caeron can persuade them that bombing will work against al quaeda). Quite a few Tory MPs do not want to get involved in a Syrian war under almost any circumtances. If he wins, at the moment, unless something changes or he presents a new plan, he will only win with right-wing Labour support, and he’ll only get enough of that if he can convince them that bombing will be effective. He reckons he can get the war voted by Christmas. Maybe he will, but then we’re like to see the dog’s dinner get more messy.

And people here will be no safer – if anything, less safe!!!

Perhaps we should send in Uhtred, son of Uthred, father of Uhtred – form The Last Kingdom??

Would be more effective, but until thenw e have to rely on policing. If there were any other effective way to defend ordinary people, there would be an overwhelming demand to take it.

As we are on this subject i wanna say 1 thing. Alex Blackman, A man sent to do a job and his country sh1ts on him in his time of need. Yes he shot a wounded Taliban fighter. But after seeing war at first hand, your mates blown up,he made a mistake. He shot a raghead who would do worse to him than he did. War and conflict makes us change from whats right to what we think is right. Shoe on other foot he would have lost his head on tv!!! So to me Alex Blackman you are a hero, war is war and never forget what they would do to you.

No comment on that nasty little case.

Except to say that there will be a lot more war crimes like that if boots are on ground, both by and against soldiers serving there, for precisely the reasons you state. The number of mentally disturbed soldiers with genuine family and social problems when they return will be much greater.

There has to be a good reason to send soldiers in, and I don’t see any but the most short-sighted desire for revenge.

And we at home will be no safer.

    #529539

somer, you are starting to sound as though you may have actually been a soldier, though I don’t know. The anonymity of the internet protects us all, and it’s needed; but it can lead to mistakes by all of us as well.

I once had cause to speak to an ex-army psychiatrist, who told me that he didn’t see soldiers returned form the wars in Iraq and Afghansitan as sick. He said that if he had had to see a soldier shaking and vomiting all the time after returning from Passchendaele in the Great War, that soldier was normal, not sick. It was the situation which was sick.

Soldiers have a job to do, and it’s a dirty job. They try to avoid it if they can, they have a wicked sense of humour, they look after each other, but they do the job. They do it even when it’s a dirty job, a brutal job.

But they can be brutalised. They’re not brutal, but war is brutal, and it makes us commit despicable acts for the reasons you gave. It makes us dehumanise the enemy – as they dehumanise us. Calling people ragheads is disgusting to me, but I can understand how soldiers do it. They have derogatary names for everything; it’s a way of surviving.

That’s why I don’t call for a rush to war. That s why war has to be the last resort, and sometiems it’s not appropriate.

Even if there’s a major ISIS attack in this country, I doubt if I’ll see a full-scale military war as appropriate. ISIS has to e defeated, and defeated militarily, but there are other ways of doing it in a situation like Syria (just as al quadea was defeated by tehse ways in Iraq).

The war you have in mind won’t make any of us safer – it will make life even more dangerous for us all, and it’s going to be dangerous enough.
