Just to pick up on Pandas point about spending huge amounts on buying “big name” players. To go back a way, Bill shankly built his Liverpool team from the grass roots , so to speak. he had scouts in schools and colleges watching for potenial in players, signing them up for junior team and then to the Liverpool side. Seemed to work,

Yes , im a Liverpool supporter.

im a chelsea fan and have been through thick and thin since the mid 70s. I totally agree that it takes a MANAGER to build a team, (Brian Clough) from average players. It isnt money that builds a team its the management of it !! look at man city ! World class players that cant play together They need a MANAGER

Does anyone think there might be too much emphasis on the champions league? As a Liverpool fan winning it was an almost indescribable feeling but im not so sure it benefits teams as we would all like to imagine, Real Madrid win it loads there in debt, Porto won it where did the 40million go ..Leeds did well one year and then nearly crippled there team trying to win it, Arsenal so many nearlys and maybes, Chelsea have tryed to buy it for 4 years do you think if there was less money involved in that tournament then it would increase the thirst for our domestic trophys? could a team with more home grown players than imports ever win that champions cup again? if you support a team outside the champions league qualifications would you really want your team in the rat race for european supremacy? my questions are hypothetical but i really want your views please feel free to add your own opinions and questions too i love watching the champions league with a passion but it comes with a price ive seen so many potentially great youths not get there chance to come throu the ranks into the first team because of a highly priced superstar flop bought on the wasted money the champions league gifted my team and it makes me so cross lol

Every sporting person, with competitive nature will wish to win the ultimate prize in there specific competition. That in world football is seen to be the champions league. That is only natural and should be what a player strives for. However at times there is a huge gulf between what private owners and club presidents want, to what the person who purchases a membership every season and stands at the Kop end would want. As a Liverpool supporter, it was great to win the Champions league (better to knock Chelsea and Man Utd out)….. But I would just about give those wins back, so Steven Gerrard has a Premiership winners medal in the locker…. The players take the transfer money, the wages offered by club managers and private owners, because those people survive on there egos. For the players, football (whether we like it or not) is a way to make a living and set themselves up for life. We can not blame the players for that. The wages, the loss of soul from clubs, the trading of players, comes down to owners, managers and club presidents.

Well Man City, for all their millions spent, did well today, didn’t they?

Took and englishman to keep them in the game!

Harry Redknapp said last week he feared not being able to compete because of City’s huge spending power.

Don’t fear Harry, it’s not how much money you have, it’s whether you can make your individuals into a team and Harry’s team made City’s individuals look very ordinary.

They were awfully close to making it into the big boys’ league without a doubt, and may have done so under Hughes. But then you look at the sky blue’s line up on Saturday, with three defensive midfielders – as they’ll have in EVERY away game this season – and then you see why Saudi millions won’t win the title. More like Bore Draw City.

Not with Mancini in charge. And it can’t be that hard to qualify for the Champs League, fgs even Toteen-ham made it.

City will chop and change Managers and buy and buy in an attempt to find the winning formula but as Real Madrid have found out, it doesn’t work that way.

I’m not a spurs fan but what Harry has achieved has been amazing given he doesn’t have the financial clout of City. So it’s all about working with what you have a making a team rather than buying up the best players and trying to accomodate their egos.

This is my 11 for Friday’s England game for what its worth, Hart as Goal keeper easy choice to make as all the other keepers are broken, Gareth Barry to protect an unfamilar Back line an interchangeable midfield, lone striker with inventive wingers & pacey wingbacks. On the whole it looks defensive in the pic but theres goals there and its a team that can hold a lead and would fair well against passing hungry teams. Gerrard to be playmaker/man off with Carrick in support.

If you fancy it tell me your 11 or your comments about the Capello Squad and the game ahead.

..p.s i have Theo Walcott and Andy Carroll in my Sun dreamteam racking up the points -goodtimes :)
