The price of food overall rose by 18% in the last year apparently and with the economic crisis wages and benefits have not risen to reflect this.
    some rises include…
    Rice – up 81%
    Pork sausages – up 51%
    Mince – up 22%
    Milk – up 14%

How are you feeling the pinch? Have you noticed a difference when you go shopping? Have you made cut backs and had to compromise on quality and quantity?

The worry by many action groups is that child poverty will grow as a result as children will be given fewer and fewer healthy foods like fruit and veg which have become more expensive.

What’s your thoughts? There is talk about raising child benefit and tax credits to counter act this but how can a government already in crisis find the money to raise these… more tax…

I personally seem to spend on average about £30 a week more than I did in recent months.

They go on about how you should be eating more healthier, and tell you what foods to get, but that’s just it, it’s too expensive for a lot of people..

I’ve very much noticed the rise in costs, my typical monthly spend for everything food/cleaning/toiletries/pet wise was £200, that’s for 2 adults/2 kids/2 cats and a parrot. we only eat meat 3 times a week (a personal preference of quality over quantity), everything is made from scratch, from pasta/pastry to sauces/wine/beer. I luckily have the time and the skills to do this but appreciate that some don’t have the time or “want” to do it.

I’ve now had to reassess my budget (yes, I’m that anal) based on the last 2 months spends and have now had to allow £280 per month to maintain the standard that we want to achieve.

One of the main offenders lately is cat food – 24 tins used to be around £7.50 and it’s now £9.40.

Shopping around is the key, bulk buying on offers that you’ll use and realising that you don’t need 57 different products to clean your house with, a spray bottle of water mixed with a splosh of white vinegar (a natural antiseptic) and a squirt of washing up liquid cleans anything and everything. Value washing power mixed with soda crystals works just as well as the leading brand and using half the amount you’d normally use is more than enough.

I can’t agree that to eat healthily you need to eat expensively, I ensure that my family have their “5 a day” but most days it’s more, cheaper cuts of good meat, if cooked right, aren’t bad for you.

I personally couldn’t bring myself to spend 100’s a week on food and the like, I’d much rather enjoy my money in other ways.

I agree Amelia. If, for example, you go to your local market, you can buy large quantities of fruit and veg really cheaply. Far cheaper than you would pay in the supermarket.

The same applies if you go to your local butcher. They often sell “managers packs” for a tenner round here. You get huge portions of chicken, pork, beef or lamb really cheaply so you can stock up your freezer.

Eating healthily isn,t expensive at all if you shop wisely.

There hasn’t been a local butcher around here for years – alas!
