When, with turnout frequently falling below 30% in local elections, will the Great British public finally understand that (in the continued absence of a “None of the Above” vote) the only way to register your political protest is to ‘spoil’ your ballot paper?

As far as I can see, the only way to radically change the way politics works in our country involves:

    1. Actually ‘turning out’ to vote.
    2. Writing ‘Spoiled Ballot’ across your ballot paper.
    3. Posting your ‘protest’ vote in the ballot box.

At least this way, the politicians will finally understand that the electorate actually cares.

Our continued failure to ‘turn out’ only means that we end up ‘electing’ the candidates we deserve.

I can see what you’re getting at. All those Thatcherite years but she never had more than 43% of the vote. In other words the majority of the electorate never wanted her in power.

But to spoil a ballot paper ? the most singular potent weapon anybody has to change things ?

    I dunno . . . . . .

We havent had a majority government since 1951 (and that was a coalition)- in fact we havent had a proper majority governemnt since before women had the vote.

Fact is, the UK elections are decided in a small number of constituencies with a minute proportion of the electorate truly affecting outcome- and to suggest spoiling ballot papers in one of these constituencies is ridiculous

The fact you feel no affinity with a political party, or your political party isnt going to get elected so you spit your dummy out and advise everyone to spoil their ballot papers is barking

To be honest there is so many flaws in so many of the parties i think a coalition would be the only sensible choice anyway, after all in business you brain storm, u get different viewpoints from different levels of employ, what maybe the management level sees the labour force doesnt and vice versa so a business that is successful takes in all view points and decides, usually resulting in a successful outcome if properly managed.
The parties nowadays are too busy blindly wanting to go against what the other party wants to actually consider their points, they almost play devils advocate for the hell of it.
Now i know very little abt politics but thats my layman’s view.
Change the whole political system completely.

If there was actually going to be any major change in our lives due to the outcome of an election the voters would turn out in force.
Take the general election in France in 2002 for example when John-Marie Le Pen was close to becoming president. People flocked to the polling stations in there millions to try and keep him out.
In Zimbabwe more recently. Almost all of the country turned out to vote in the hope that it would bring radical change.
The trouble is in this country that sod all actually changes no matter who gets in power. A bit of extra tax here… maybe a hospital closing or a new school opening. WOW… not exactly worth the walk to the voting booth is it?
But that in itself is a good thing. It shows you are a stable prosporing country where all that is needed is a little tweak here and there to keep things running smoothly and on course.

Only the radicals want radical change. But even then…. most of them would sh*it themselves if they actually got it.

Coalitions never work. To much time spent in to many meetings and never actually getting round to solving anything.

hmmm i can see your point there, but surely better more meetings less actually changing things, but when decisions and changes are made they are the right ones ?
For example better to sort the NHS out say but spend a whole year doing it and not touching say education than going through 10 years and neither still being right ? i dunno just a thought.

We had a local conservative candidate knock this evening.

Cos he had a crombi coat on Dave told him he’s gonna vote for him

Most people who don’t vote choose not to vote. They choose not to be part of the democratic process. Electorally they are null, void individuals.
