It started as a marketing campaign dreamt up by around 20 fruit and veg companies and the U.S. National Cancer Institute at a meeting in California in 1991. It has been remarkably successful there and here in the UK.
3 January, 2013 at 4:28 pm #517069You know what tinks I think it might be true that veggies and fruit is not as vital to healh as we all thought. If you think about it we are naturally carnivores and have evolved to who we are without the variation in diet we now feel is essential to good health.
I love veggies and fruit but my hubby refuses to eat anything green… have to say he seems healthy enough :D
3 January, 2013 at 4:34 pm #5170705 a day is a myth. It is based on a healthy person. If you have anything wrong health wise it should be adjusted to suit you, for eg im only meant to have 2 friut and 1 veg a day.
For best advise see your dietitian or doctor, get a blood test and it tell excatly what you need.

My cholesterol level has always been low despite eating totally the wrong foods for that.
Since we moved to France my weight has decreased over that time and I am much healthier in that respect though time and age catch up with you in other ways.
What you eat and drink affects you and not a pre-defined ideology, when you find the right balance then it is good
11 January, 2013 at 10:21 pm #517072Fruit and Vegetables are very important to a healthy diet, of course, dunno about the actual numbers though. I suppose 5 a day would be an approximate number to be adjusted accordingly.
More importantly, in order to determine whether a diet was a healthy one would be by looking at the other categories of food eaten I.e. The Fat, salt and sugar content. In addition not smoking, only drinking alcohol to moderate amounts, and keeping a healthy weight are all vital to health.
So, is it the fruit and veg that make people healthier, or are people who eat better also more likely to have healthier lifestyles…..
12 January, 2013 at 4:29 pm #517073there’s no doubt that fruit n veg are a healthier option…….but a marketing ploy by supermarkets to raise their sales is devious to say the least and one that wasn’t even considered by the general public………..ie was ‘5 a day’ actually correct …….we the public just get sucked in and pushed along by these huge companies.
