I disagree, unhealthy food is often cheaper than healthy food. You could probably get a burger from McDonalds for 70p while lean, minced beef would cost you a lot more. Likewise, a can of fizzy drink and a packet of crisps will cost a lot less than a bottle of pure fruit juice and a packet of unsalted nuts. Basically, the healthier you want to eat, the more it will cost you.

    Rubbish

i strongly disagree with the weighing of children and pulling them up for their wieght, there has been far too much bullying over the years towards so called fat children by their peers resulting in long term insecurities and eating disorders. yes ! we should all ensure kids eat healthy and get adequate exercise ,but not to excess on exercise i have seen kids that constantly play football etc which have caused long term damage to their growing bones, but as others have stated kids go through growth spurts alot of them go through the puppy fat stages it doesnt mean they are going to grow up to be fat or unhealthy.
Things are going the right way with healthy school dinners, good to keep up the education for people on healthy eating but dont ostricise the kids with their peers by weighing them its asking for trouble.

Most people here seem reasonably intelligent, and capable of cooking a healthy meal.
However, there are people out there who have not a clue how to rear children. And
those badly reared children may go on to become bad members of society, and bad
    parents.
Anything this government does to try to tackle bad parenting should be welcomed.

It’s obvious to me that unhealthy processed food is cheaper than quality, healthy food. If you go to any low-cost supermarket you will see for example that their own store-brand fish fingers will be a lot cheaper than buying fresh fish. Also, their store-brand chicken nuggets will be cheaper than fresh, lean, poultry meat. It’s far cheaper to eat crap food than to eat healthy food. I remember going to supermarkets where you could buy a can of baked beans for 9p and a loaf of bread for 20p. What healthy snack can you buy for 29p?

Fresh mince from Asda – buy 1 get 1 free £2.50
Bag of tetties and 2 onions £1.50

    Total £4.00

get Sunny to make Burgers or meatballs and chips or mash for 6 kids

Take 6 kids for kids meals at MacDonalds £12.00 approx ???

I’d say the fresh option was cheaper

Grow your own veg – there;s no need to by the pure fruit drinks -buy squash- ffs – are folks too lazy these days to even add a bit of cold water to the glass

Turn the pcs and game consoles and tvs off for at least an hour a night – give the kids a ball – and go tell them to kick it round – or give the lasses a skipping rope – or a bit of chalk and some stones – ffs it costs next to nowt to keep fit

Well that’s an interesting statement from our resident Socialist and supporter of the Dear Leader. The novelty is that the Government is actually doing anything at all – apart from holding press conferences and listening to focus groups.

Here’s a good one. Tthe recent eye catching ”initiative” (announced by the Education Secretary Alan Johnson) that schools scrap junk food and introduce ”healthy foods”, has already been ”announced” seven times in the last nine years and still hasn’t been acted on – maybe they will yet again blame this on someone else…… yes that’s a good idea….. lets blame the Tories, it’s bound to be their fault isn’t it? After all we have only been in power for a decade or so.

This latest ”announceable” that school pupils will be weighed at ages 4 and 10 is another classic example of governement by news headlines.

Schools still haven’t been given any guidelines as to what they should do if they have a fat child on their hands. Indeed the definition of ”overweight” has not even been circulated to LEA’s much less to schools.

I fully expect the Dear Leader to hold another highly publicised meeting at No 10 with Jamie Oliver when he can weep fake tears for a generation of starving children rescued from child poverty…… ooops sorry, wrong press release…. obese children with unhealthy eating habits.

Oh jeeze, don’t get me started on this issue.

As the proud mother of a beautiful 16year old daughter, who has had anorexia (and been extremely ill with it) for the past 3 years i abhor the thought of ‘fat testing’ in schools.

Let children be children. Just because a child is ‘podgy’ or overweight at age 4, does not mean he/she will grow to be obese. Children’s shapes and sizes change as they grow. It’s all part of development.

But whatever you do, DO NOT instill weight issues into their heads at such an early age. Fat testing is doing exactly this. By all means educate them, (and their parents), sensibly on nutrition, but do not make it ‘personal’ by individual testing.

There is enough pressures on children to look right, dress right, have the latest gadgets, be the right size, have the right hair colour etc today, without having weight issues forced upon them at school.

I feel very strongly about this issue and find it very difficult to put into words just exactly how angry I am about the whole thing.

And yes Drivel, you’re right, it’s better to have an overweight child than an anorexic one.

I dont think they are a good idea because then kids will grow up worrying about weight be ittoo big or too small and thats where eating disorders come in.

KIDS ARE ONLY FAT BECAUSE OF LAZY PARENTING

children that get anorexia is a whole different ball game dosen’t belong on the same thread

    I disagree.

And you know i speak from experience.

If children are led to believe they should be a certain size – and fat testing is only the beginning of this – it can in some instances, lead to anorexia.

I do not agree with this testing at all.
