I dont think religion held science back necessarily, technical expertise certainly did. The chinese who invented just about everything suddenly didnt because they didnt have glass and what they did have reacted with stuff, “western” scientists had glass which is very unreactive and so the chinese were held back. Some scientists put forward theories which possibly just weren’t questioned enough so science was held back as most took the theories as gospel till some brave soul debunked them. Religious scholars certainly ask questions. I dont think either side can simply be dismissed is my point i guess
