All ye know on earth, and all ye need to know, to quote Mr Keats.
7 March, 2018 at 12:31 pm #1089132Time travel unless you are talking about minute differences between moving bodies will never be possible. Playing along with this fantasy, my time of time travel would be a few minutes before Marks conception, to hand his father a condom and a picture of what would come out if it wasn’t used.
7 March, 2018 at 12:33 pm #1089134I remember at school reading a Ray Bradbury short story on time travel.
Some guy goes back to dinosaur times, and steps on a leaf or something. When he returns he’s living in a dictatorship. Apparently the slightest infringement of the world can have future consequences.
Please don’t ask me how stepping on a leaf can eventually lead to a dictatorship since it’s rather a long time since I was at school, but the story made an impression on me.

That’s true, it’s commonly referred to as ” the butterfly effect ” where a flapping butterfly wings can cause chain reactions meaning a tsunami can result on the other side of the world using an extreme example.
I don’t believe time travel is possible unless as mentioned you refer to miniscule differences with high speeds. If for eg you travelled back 500 years and killed one person, you would effectively murder millions possibly yourself creating a paradox.. if you killed an ancestor you couldn’t exist but then how could you go back in time in the first place? If time travel was possible, we would already see evidence of it from the future anyway.

7 March, 2018 at 5:55 pm #1089143If you read the JC TM rental contract is does state :
JC TM travellers may observe only, interference with the environment or with sentient beings will be deemed a violation of this Directive, even to save their lives and/or their machine , unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said environment. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation.

7 March, 2018 at 9:40 pm #1089152That was the instruction for the time-traveller in the Ray Bradbury short story, too, mark.
Nothing to stop an accident.
8 March, 2018 at 11:51 am #1089165Time travel into the past is impossible for several reasons not least because of causality. A form of *relative* time travel into the future is possible (and actually occurs already on very small scales) due to time dilation.
