From the BNP website
“Heartbreak in Burnley where John Rowe obtained exactly the same number of votes (after two recounts) as the Labour candidate in Rosegrove with Lowerhouse, with the Labour candidate declared the winner after literally pulling the long straw.”
Can you imagine if you were going to vote and decided that your one vote wouldn’t matter…
8 May, 2007 at 3:02 pm #270171that is utterly disgusting… i cant think of anything more stupid …
they should have called a tie with both candidates. and a re vote if necessary ??? why did they get away with this…
in kirklees the bnp were only just over a hundred votes behind the tories but if they had drawn it wouldnt have gone to the tories or there would have been riots in the streets.
sureley there is a law to stop this kind of thing ??? anyone know of any…8 May, 2007 at 5:25 pm #270172@waspish wrote:

So the electorate that chose to vote Tory dont count then Wasp- how very undemocratic of you
The BNP came SECOND, they didnt win, they didnt get elected, its called democracy, get used to it :)
8 May, 2007 at 8:59 pm #270173of course the tory vote counts just as every other vote does they beat the bnp fair and square and they both came in way behind the lib dems. what i said was if it were a tie i cant understand why the decision is made to draw a long straw literally. that to my mind is undemocratic and underhanded not to mention making the political arena resemble a scrap in the playground..
what next my dads got a bigger car than your dad so i win ??????? :lol:8 May, 2007 at 10:10 pm #270174errrr…..what you actually said was
“but if they had drawn it wouldnt have gone to the tories or there would have been riots in the streets”
As i said, why should a democratic process result in a riot unless those rioting believe they have some god given right to be elected or refuse to accept the other candidates votes. So BNP supporters would have rioted…lol, good to see some things dont change
8 May, 2007 at 11:09 pm #270175Fascist Labour won the seat because they picked a straw that was one inch bigger than the BNP’s, thats democracy.
9 May, 2007 at 5:41 pm #270176no emma, the tories won this seat

Rosegrove with Lowerhouse? No, Paul reynolds won it of fascist Labour.
9 May, 2007 at 9:58 pm #270178slayer you miss understand me. or i didnt make it clear enough i meant if they had drawn in the election. which they did not the bnp was over a hundred votes behind. if they had drawn they wouldnt have dared draw the straw to get the winner as people here would have taken to the streets. but as you said and i concede the tories won fair and square here. sorry if i wasnt clear enough

wasp, thats exactly what i thought you said- my point was that just because the outcome would not have been to the liking of a SECTION of the voters is not a reason to undermine democracy and take to the streets
