[So tell me…if you could dramatically improve the financial quality of life for you and your family by working abroad, you’d say “oh no, I couldn’t possibly leave this job in my home country paying peanuts, I’ll stay here and live on the breadline thank you”?

As for putting Britons out of work, most of the businesses I know that employ Eastern Europeans do so because they can’t find any Brits to do the jobs because they can either “earn” more on benefits or they think the work is too demeaning or hard. The Eastern Europeans seem to take more pride in earning good money and supporting their families through their own hard work than many Brits do…

Jen, your post is riddled with generalisations and cliches. I’ve heard them all before; Brits are lazy and Poles aren’t.

My only gripe is with the Brown government who allowed all of this to happen.

Can I just say that using emotion to try to win a discussion is futile. It might be better in future if you just stick to the facts. It’s gets pretty boring if you don’t.

Doesn’t matter anyway, the EU is in the midst of collapse, Greece, Spain & Italy will be leaving shortly. Another few years the EU won’t exist as nations reclaim independence and take back control of their sovereignty and economy.

Fact: a local restaurant advertised for staff to wash dishes and to clean. The only applicants for dishwashing were Eastern Europeans. The British applicants for the cleaning job wanted to dictate their own working hours that didn’t fit in with restaurant hours or complained that the pay was too low. He was offering above the minimum wage and slightly more than other restaurants in the area were paying. All the new employees were Eastern Europeans and he’s very happy with them.

Fact: the man who holds the flower stall across the way from me is constantly recruiting new staff for both his flower stall and the fairground rides that he manages. The Brits are happy to stand on the flower stall and text or play games on their mobile phones but don’t want to engage with the customers and certainly don’t see why they should help put out the flowers and plants at the beginning of the day or help pack up at the end of the day. The Eastern Europeans on the other hand help with putting out and packing up, engage with the customers and always have a smile on their faces. All of the money taken tends to be cash…9 out of 10 of the Brits have been sacked for stealing money; none of the Eastern Europeans have.

Fact: When any Brit comes into my shop asking for a job they are generally dressed scruffily, chewing gum, and if I’m lucky they’ll take both the earphones of their ipods out of their ears before muttering “got any jobs going?”. When an Eastern European comes in looking for a job they’re smartly turned out, they have a copy of a CV in their hands which they offer and ask if I’ll review it and let them know if I have any positions in the near future. Now which am I more likely to be happy to put in front of my customers?

I could go on and on but that’s enough I think. Maybe the reason you’ve heard “the cliches” before is because there are so many real examples. There are Brits who want to work badly enough to consider any job, but they are becoming fewer and further between.

    As for this…

I shall leave you and Jen to give each a big hug knowing that you scared the nasty man away.

…sounds like a patronising comment from someone who hasn’t got a leg to stand on to me.

Do you still envision such an eventuality if the Irish electorate accept the treaty today Tom?

I worked for a place last summer which only employed Brits. The hours were long (we did an 83 hour shift one week) and the work was hard and physical.

There’s no shortage of British grafters – in fact the owner of the business himself didn’t think Polish workers were up to it and wouldn’t consider employing them.

That’s a very different story to yours.

Not just my story though Terry, it’s a common theme in this part of the world unfortunately.

I don’t think it’ll make a difference either way to be honest mate, Ireland signing the treaty isn’t going to stop the complete social & economic collapse of the whole of the EU is it?

The EU is a failed project. They tried to tie different cultures, heritages, political ideologies and economic systems into one neat little super-state package, and it’s exploded right in their face. Just as everyone said it would.

Empires don’t work. We’ve seen it in the past all too often. Empires always collapse on themselves. The only reason Empires of the past lasted as long as they did was through military control. The EU empire, however, tried a different tactic – control via economy.

They tried using Keynes’ philosophy of “He who controls the economy controls the country” all too literally and it backfired, simple as.

The EU is eroding away slowly and will die a very painful death, there are a lot more riots and economic crashes to come yet.
