The laws of the game say (penalty kick) http://www.fifa.com/en/laws/Laws14_01.htm
“The defending goalkeeper:
remains on his goal line, facing the kicker, between the goalposts until the ball has been kicked.”For atleast 2 of England’s penalties, the portugal goalie came off his line before the penalty started.
Page 6.
“The goalkeeper also infringes the Laws if he moves from his goal line before the ball has been kicked.Referees must ensure that when players infringe this Law, appropriate action is taken.”
Argentine ref
3 July, 2006 at 2:47 pm #229263This is clearly clutching at straws.
England went out because out of 4 penalties they could only score 1. To call the Portugese keeper and the ref a cheat is nonsense.
Time to move on, and realise that over the piece England simply werent good enough.3 July, 2006 at 3:41 pm #229264Whats happened has happened BM.
The fact remains though, the penalty shoot out was not taken seriously by match officials (1 ref, 2 linesman, a 4th and 5th offical and of course, FIFA).
Apparently some Brazil fans have commited suicide because brazil were knocked out. Lets not pretend it doesnt mean a GREAT deal to ALOT of people.
3 July, 2006 at 6:03 pm #229265Is there an art to the penalty kick?
I was intrested to see the German’s had only missed 1 penalty in 18 or something like that since 1982.
Also One of their backroom staff handed Jens Lehmann a piece of paper before the Argentina game telling him the most likely place their penalty takers would aim the ball. Lehmann memorised this and used it during the shoot-out.
In every tourmanent that England play in the future they’ll probably have to win one shoot-out if they wanna ever win a tournament.
Maybe for the next 4 years they should employ a head shrink or something. Im actually being serious, cause if they could take penalty kicks it would a huge bonus for them.3 July, 2006 at 7:05 pm #229266Maybe so. One thing is for sure, had FIFA employed proffessionals to officiate the game, we would’ve had a better chance of winning, because ricardo wouldn’t have saved 3 of our penaties.
3 July, 2006 at 7:17 pm #229267I dont know the in’s and out of laws of whatever. I cant remember the penalties. If there was anything in what Emma’s saying then the Ref would have spotted it, and you can bet your life the English experts and Media would have spotted it.
3 July, 2006 at 7:26 pm #229268Well if it’s never enforced anywhere then what’s the problem. It gives everyone the same advantage.
I’d be interested to see Portugal’s penalties again to see if Paul Robinson was doing the same thing.3 July, 2006 at 7:31 pm #229269Emma’s argument was the England were “robbed” because Ricardo came off his line in two of the penalties. If Paul Robinson(and all other goalies)do the same then the argument falls apart.
3 July, 2006 at 7:47 pm #229270Well far be it for anyone to let the facts get in the way of a good fight but I think you’ll find neither goalie moved (significantly) off their line for any of the penalties. They may have moved to the left or the right but that is allowed. At no stage, even after saving a penalty, was either goalie more than a foot or so off his line. The difference was that the Portugese goalie guessed the right way and was more athletic. Find the video replay on this link then ffwd to 2 mins 45 secs – see what you think.

IF robbo had come off his line, and saved a penalty, then it should be taken again.
Since he didnt do either, whats the problem…
