I think this showed that England are virtually a one man team. They didn’t offer much if anything in the first half then Beckham comes on and it was like watching a different for large spells.
Probably would have been different if Rooney, Terry & Owen were playing but with the way Croatia played they deserved to win that one. I thought Croatia might have just accepted 2-2 as they didn’t need a win but they were determined to finish on a high.
21 November, 2007 at 10:41 pm #293611Even more glaring than Beckham not starting was deciding to throw an inexperienced Goalie into the fray in the last game of Qualifying. They’d have been far better starting with James. Also they started with a lone striker in a home game who was given little or no support.
Worst England performance I’ve ever seen in my life. I thought Croatia were a nippy little side though, and they could have scored a few more. They looked dangerous every counter attack they had.
21 November, 2007 at 10:45 pm #293612Pity the goalie didnt make a co ck up when we played them a few sundays back lol but he needs to fill the villa co ck ups books and he did a blinder lol
21 November, 2007 at 10:49 pm #293613i was baffled by the starting 11, but i thought… no maybe he knows what hes doing.. after 14 mins i thought, go on.. be brave.. through beckham on now and another striker.. he did’nt.. he did it at half time
we then score 2.. then he tells the team to sit back and give them possesion, croatia are good at that… its like playing against the best brazil team in the world and saying… let them pass to pele
never mind, in the long run.. the best thing that could have happened for england, new manager for the world cup qualification

I certainly didn’t expect to see Carson in there. Looks like Steve’s on the way out now, England have had a few dodgy results and performances but I think this is one too many. Can’t see many fans backing him either since he wasn’t the man they wanted in the first place.
21 November, 2007 at 11:07 pm #293615steve has said he won’t stand down…
don’t blame him to be honest, the fa would have to pay him upto 2 million pounds if they wanted him out
22 November, 2007 at 12:28 am #293616pressure got to the keeper in the 1st half hes 22! ok hes playing premier league football but 22 years old and told to go out and play infront of nearly 80,000 people in one of the most important games for england!
2nd half he had a blinder to be honest!
beckham should of came on earlier and his face said that from when we where 2-0 down he was itching to get on!
we got a gift of a penalty and a cracking 2nd goal and then like matty said we sat back
typical england! we fail to put the nail in the coffin everytime its like we are too polite to batter a team!
we have got 2 years now to build a team for the world cup……
so who for the manager job now?
mclaren will be paid off
bookies say mourinho
id like to see venables have another pop or maybe stuart pearce
22 November, 2007 at 12:34 am #293617i don’t think we need to rush to appoint a new manager, wait till this season is over, let the club managers do thier thing and see who does what… the england team can pick itself at the end of the day, we don’t need friendly after friendly, the friendly against austria you could argue cost england its place in euro 2008.. owen getting injured ect
though my mate said what they should do, is have a home nations cup next summer. england, scotland, wales, ireland and republic.. we need somthing to take our mind of the euro’s, and maybe it will show uefa that the uk can hold the world cup.. maybe our best chance of qualifying

I was saying exactly the same today! It would give us something to do over the summer
22 November, 2007 at 5:36 pm #293619Yup. It would certainly be popular, and generate a lot of interest, and cash for the FA’s.
Only problem might be it could be to popular. I doubt if UEFA would allow a Home Nations Tournament to coincide with the European Championships, because no one would watch the European Championships in Britain if the two overlapped.
If they could fit it in im sure it would be a great tournament
