Do excuse me. I didn’t mean to leave the conversation so suddenly. It’s just I began to think about Dan Brown’s books and the horror overwhelmed me to the point of sudden unconsciousness.
To misquote the Boosh, my problem with him is what every right thinking person’s problem with him is: He is a bullshit muncher. Ridiculous plots heaped on top of ridiculous characters – all accomplished with poorly written and badly phrased prose. A good book should leave us understanding more about the world and humanity after we have finished it. Dan Brown’s books leave us a poorer person for having taken the trouble. And, no, popularity is not an indicator of quality. I think you’ll find Katie Price’s ‘autobiography’ is one of the best selling books of recent years.
well we shall have to politely have to agree to disagree on the author in question. The world would be a poorer place if we all liked the same things.
But I dont feel a poorer person for reading them.
I think Brown is a good writer.
He just lacks that storytelling ability in my opinion.
The Da Vinvi code was disappointing in so many ways and the film version couldn’t paper over the cracks either.
There were just too many questions unanswered.26 August, 2008 at 1:04 pm #366519I thought the film was rubbish, and what a waste of a good cast too.
Im hoping the Angels one will be an improvement.

There were just too many questions unanswered.I am no expert but that sounds like a contradiction in terms. Surely to be a good writer of novels you have to be able to tell a story?

Being a good writer is different to being a good storyteller.

There’s nothing wrong with the media or the printed word. Only people can be emotionless and I’m just asking for a little more wit and imagination. It might even be a good thing.

Exactly. Or when laffing smileys are used on their own, with no text, when quoting someone having a go at the common enemy. As ugly as it gets, a cowards way out and plenty examples on here.

Fair point. But I shall never cease to fight for the humble full stop of course, with its dignified yet effective simplicity.
