People who cause death by dangerous driving and whilst under the influence of alcohol, should be banned from driving for life and sent to prison for the maximum possible term. This poor mother is absolutly devastated. I can,t begin to imagine what she is going through.
link9 June, 2008 at 9:57 am #343939Another tragic and devastating loss because of someones selfish act.
All the worse for the fact that he is rich enough to have insurance and if necessary to have a driver to take him home if he is intoxicated. Selfish to the core. Hope he rots in jail and is haunted by the grief he has caused for the rest of his days.9 June, 2008 at 11:16 am #343940sad sad loss and totally unecessary, as Melody said he could have got a driver or stayed over night for the sake of a few pounds 2 children have lost their lives, i doubt he will be able to live with himself now.
10 June, 2008 at 12:50 pm #343941It’s unfortunate that people are asked to be sensible when they are least equipped to be. That is, when they are drunk. A tragic accident.
11 June, 2008 at 1:23 pm #343942The punishnment for causing death by DANGEROUS driving is the major offence, and in my view it should normally carry a mandatory LIFETIME ban from driving AND a prison sentence. There is a distinction between blatantly dangerous driving and careless driving in terms of blame, even if the tragic result is the same.
Drunk driving in itself, when no accident has occurred, is also a serious offence, and the punishment is quite harsh already. As well as the existing threshhold which leads to an automatic ban, I think there should be an additional lower one, say 50mg, that gives 6 penalty points. As things stand, if you’re just under the limit, you’re in the clear, just over, you’re banned.
One usually thinks of drink drivers as people who habitually think they can get away with it and are irresponsible ‘don’t care’ types. But is there not also the possibility of people who would never normally consider drink driving getting drunk one day and deciding to drive AFTER they have become drunk and incapable. I knew a guy who did that once – decided he was going to try and do a ‘ton’ on his motorbike when he wa already drunk. People tried to stop him but they couldn’t. Anyway, he went off on his bike while his girlfriend was beside herself with worry. He returned a few minutes later claiming he’d done a ‘ton’ but I think he meant ‘ten’!
12 June, 2008 at 12:54 pm #343943A zero tolerance rule change is what is required and I cannot understand why such a thing has not been implemented!
Basically you dont touch alcohol ATALL if you are driving. Simple.
Then the law is clear and if those who are lazy still want to break it they will face the tough consequences.
Better to be safe than sorry. At the moment certain people could have a pint and be over the limit, others could sink three and be under.
The guy who has one pint causes an accident and is penalised, yet he may feel in mind he is in full control of his senses.
The guy who has three will carry on regardless, even though he may not have full control of his senses atall.
Best just have none innit.

soZ but on a serious note, ive called the police on afew folks whilest workin in the pub trade, as folks thnkin they cud drive after a bucket full, ive was knocked down when i was 6 by a drunk driver, my daughter when she was 3 was hit by a car by a young drunk driver… my friends child died by a drunk driver the guy got a 3mth ban and a 6mth suspended jail sentence… another young lad down our road was also killed by a drunk driver, whom when was caught couldnt get out the car as was that p’s’d another suspended sentence but no drinkin ban…
our justice system is laffable atimes, there should be Zero torlance for drink drivers.. especially if they take a life…. a life for a life in my eyes…
14 June, 2008 at 8:36 am #343946Personally I only drive with zero alcohol or near zero alcohol. I don’t drink much anyway, just the odd small glass of lager, cider or wine. By ‘near zero’ I mean no more than residual trace like if I’d eaten a liqueur chocolate or had a small lager several hours previously.
I think we should have zero tolerance of dangerous driving. The penalties for someone caught driving dangerously, even when 100% sober and no accident has occurred, should be the same as if they’d been over the alcohol limit. A guy has just been caught in our town doing 60 in the 30 limit. He’s had his licence revoked for 2 months but after that he has to start again as a learner and re-take his driving test.
15 June, 2008 at 5:54 pm #343947total ba for life. anyone caught drink driving when they know it means prison deserves to go to prison for a full ten years. no drink. no driving. no excuses.
