Tommy you sound to me as it you are belittling the seriousness of this situation. Either that or you watch too much tv. Many many donors are needed to keep ordinary people alive. (Take this from one that knows).
Angel i hope all goes well for your sis and her mum. Shes very lucky she has a live donor who is a match. As you said it is indeed a gift of life.
Some are not in this situation and have to rely on cadaver donations.
Organ donation has to be one of the most selfless actions known and people should be proud to carry the card.21 April, 2006 at 10:35 pm #210141@chess wrote:

21 April, 2006 at 11:35 pm #210142ive another issue going through my head now…
my daughter asked me what I was doing on the pc… I said reading up on donating my organs when I die. She asked me if an organ was like a piano… lol she’s asked me to explain to her what and why im looking at it… ive told her ill sit down and chat with her when i know more about it… but how do you explain this to a 7 yr old.. ?? and how old do you have to be to donated your organs…?? Im reading through the website but not getting the questions im looking for… anyone help me out..?
21 April, 2006 at 11:50 pm #210143Giggles made a good point there, that unless people do make their relatives aware of their wishes, it could all come undone.
I’m an organ donor, have been one for years. I’d be more than happy to let someone else have a chance after my death.
Tom, iv’e no idea where you get your stats from about pple mysteriously dying. I think too that no, you shouldn’t belittle this post
21 April, 2006 at 11:54 pm #210144There are many websites mary relating to it all. Next time your in a drs surgery pick up some leaflets there or request some on line.
There is no starting age limit for donation im not sure of the ceiling age but i think it may be around 60 depending on donors health of course. The recipient age used to be around 55 but it is much higher now cos of better knowledge anti rejection drugs etc etc21 April, 2006 at 11:55 pm #210145Try this one Mary

i wouldn’t do such a thing
it’s obviously a serious subject.
i just don’t want to end up mysteriously hanging of the edge of a cliff because a friend of alcoholic magee needs a new liver.
Tommy it is a very serious subject but i do think you should read up abit on it. Carrying a donor card doesnt tell someone your blood group, your tissue type , how good of a match you will be etc etc. All these things need to be taken into account before an organ can be transplanted else there wouldnt be a waiting list at all cos everyone would match everyone else.
The card is just an indidcator that you would like your organs to be donated in which case co ordinators get in touch with next of kin and it goes from there. Recipients arent picked out willy nilly they are on a long waiting list and it is by the grace of God that the donors organ will match yours. Much testing needs to be done and if you can imagine one organ and maybe at least four people of the *list* needing it you can imagine the heartache when told it doesnt suit.

when i die of natural causes, anyone is free to help themselves to my organs if it will help them
if i’m murdered or died in suspicious circumstances however, the organs get buried with me
i wonder if you can do it like that :-k if so then they’re free to have my organs
As far as i am aware Tommy it has to happen like that cos if you were murdered or died in supicious circumstances (God forbid) they would need to do a post mortem /forensics etc and your organs would then be useless anyway. There is a time limit between harvesting organs and transplanting them. Hence most organs are retrieved from folk who die whilst in hosp so that they can keep the body on oxygen etc till the organs are retrieved. They have then only a certain amount of time to transport the organ to where the recipient is waiting.
So get a card Tommy, register and make sure your family know of ur wishes and just think what good you could be doing. You already give blood and that doesnt harm ya :D :D
