I am sorry but I cannot go along with the let us pat ourselves on the back because our violent death rate amongst under 14s has gone down! The population has gone up, so the actual incidences are going to be higher. They are saying statistically the incidences have gone down, but they are talking about 17 children per million children. Thats still a hell of a lot of children dying violent deaths! My guess is that the actual figures haven’t changed that much in the last 30 odd years. I hate people who massage figures to make things seem better than they are.

I can see what you are saying Melody, but wouldnt it be better whether the abuse is a sick child not taken to docs cos parents busy or a childs being brutally beaten, raped or molested, if the first step was to take the child away then arrange all the meetings and reports, make the decision if the child is arisk going home or better off staying where they are, atleast that way there will be less “oops we messed up innocent deaths and abuse”. Also it may actually encourage them to crack on and sort it out in reality if they really minded to get their arses in gear they could arrange the meetings and reports and reach a preliminary not at immediate danger at least conclusion easily within 6 weeks. The follow up and monitoring can still continue after that.I’d rather have my son taken away from me for 6 weeks to protect him only to have him returned in the knowledge they got it wrong than have him at risk, remembering that it may not be you doing the abusing but a member of your family you werent aware of, having the child removed from the family surroundings and unit is the best policy. There is no reason why these parents can’t visit the kids every night supervised still so they remain in contact, just in a neutral and supervised environment.

No. You are quite wrong. I’m afraid you didn’t read the article properly:

In England and Wales, between 1974 and 2006, the annual number of such deaths fell by 38% from 136 to 84. As a proportion of the child population, violent death rates almost halved from 32 to 17 per million children.

We are making progress. However, as I said, one death of this kind is too many and each one is an awful tragedy.

I did read it properly :) hence my comment about not patting ourselves on the back. I am glad we have halved the amount of children dying, but if there are 12 million children that is still 204 little ones dying violent deaths every year.

And let us not forget that for every child that dies, there are hundreds who suffer in silence.

204? Oh do try and concentrate, you twit:
