no need to admit it, it happens on all php boards. Its up to them if they want to abuse or ignore the facility to do so.

As it happens Sharon, this is simply not true. Only the individual user knows their password and can therefore sign into their own account to read their PM’s. “Administrators” do not have this facility, in spite of all the (incorrect) rumours to the contrary.

Pete, it really doesn’t bear thinking about eh?

Apart from anything else, deleting her account will solve nothing. All that will happen is she’ll sign back in with a new user name and start all over again if she wants to carry on with her childish antics.

well Ive had this debate on a few forums and the jury’s out because its about trust and trusting what users and admin say.

I dont care if my PM’s get read, and it actually does appear to me that you dont read them personally, because you would have abused the privilage by now Im sure, over debates with our geoffers and the rest of us.

But I think the facility to do so does exist. And as Im not admin anywhere (cant think why btw! ) I wouldnt know the answer for sure.

Sharon, without wishing to drag this subject on unnecessarily but …..

There is no facility at all for Admins on phpBB message boards to read member’s PMs without their knowledge – the jury isn’t out on trhis matter, the facility simply does not exist. It is yet another urban myth.

What can happen (and indeed has happened on another – now defunct – message board) is that an Administrator CAN change the password on a user’s account, thus enabling them to sign in as that user and alter any of the settings – including the reading of PMs.

However, as they do not know and have no way of finding out, the user’s private password, the act of changing it to permit themselves access effectively prevents the user from getting into their own account. Therefore, if this is done, it immediatly becomes apparent to the account holder.

Well there was a particular board I joined for a while, it was a phpbb one, maybe a different version to this one and it was a specialist subject board.

Admin give you a standard piece of info when you join that they will delete personal messages from time to time to free space up on defunct accounts. I presume that if they have the power to delete them, they would also have the power to read them?

Perhaps its a different piece of software here.

I very much doubt that Sharon. We are talking about two different things here:

    1) Your assertion that Admins read member’s PMs which you said “happens on all php boards”. I can give you an absolute guarantee that it doesn’t happen on this board. I have explained how it is possible for an Administrator to read another user’s PMs but this cannot be done without alerting the account holder. Either way, we simply do NOT do this under any circumstances.

    2) Your comment as to the Administrator’s ability to remove PMs to save space on a phpBB Board’s database. There is a function called “Prune Posts” which allows Admin to select a user’s posts according to where they appear, the dates of posting and so on and delete then ‘en masse’. I believe that there is a ”tweak” which allows similarly (i.e. date) selected PMs to be deleted as a part of this process.

It does NOT allow you to access the user’s Private Message facility so that you can open and read their PMs – it simply allows ‘mass deletion’ according to pre-set parameters.

We do NOT use this facility in JustChat. Instead, and to keep the database to a reasonable size, we limit the size of the user’s Inbox, Outbox, Sentbox, and Savebox. From memory, the first three boxes are set so that each PM takes up something like 4% of the pre-set capacity and the Savebos takes up 2% per message (or thereabouts).

If a user’s boxes fill up, then it is up to that user to select which messages should be deleted from the database.

However, and for the avoidance of all doubt, we do not have a facility for reading user’s PMs and we have never ever done so. I hope that this explanation clears up any residual doubts.
