Oh the power of advertising……Bang goes any chance of a stand in job then…

I wonder if any Blind smokers would like to comment……..having said that, maybe they cant see this…. :?

I’d agree totally if tobacco could still be advertised then they could attract new smokers from the advertising. I dont think established smokers will change brands and as i understand it the government are looking to tobacco products being sold from under the counter so any point of sales logo wont help anyway if they implement that

Tobacco….a chemical induced addictive habit taxed by the government for the people on behalf of the people…. whats took them so long ? how long have we known smoking to be adverse to health….. if only they could take there heads out of………..the sand…. :?

The £15 billion it earns them a yr

They reckon that it’s to dis-courage kids from buying them!

Its obscene to make money at the expense of people’s health. And they have had the ability to take the nicotine out of cigarettes since the 50s. And the only reason people get addicted is because of the nicotine. People could then smoke or not and wouldn’t have got addicted. They didn’t because they thought it would drive cigarettes with nicotine in them under the counter!

when i was a kid you used to be able to buy single cigs for 8p each off the ice cream man no packaging at all………..why do they think a plain box is going to make any diffrence at all ???……..yes nicotine is addictive as are all drugs ……does putting weed in a clear plastic bag put off people smoking it?……..the only way to stop people smoking would be to withdraw cigs off the market all together and as we all know the goverment wont do that as they make far to much money from it…….the only way they could be forced to would be to put everyone taxs up to cover the loss !

From personal experience I find people smoke a brand regardless of price increase or packaging. When those “shock pictures” were put on packets they made no difference to sales at all. The younger smokers, those under 35 ish will more likely smoke a premium brand as opposed to a cheapo brand even though its manufactured by the same company. We sell 20 Bensons for £6.25. Sterling which is a brand by Gallaghers who make Bensons is on sale for £4.37, thats nearly a £2 differnce but its mainly the older smokers who go for those type of brands. When we try and push a cheaper brand on the youngsters they will say they won’t been seen dead with a packet of cheapo’s. Ironic!
Personally I don’t think re-branding the boxes will make any difference, just like “hiding” them under the counter will not discourage new smokers or young kids. I don’t smoke and I stand by the gantry for hours on end a day but looking at them does not make me want to have a drag!
One thing that does bug me as a retailer is adults buying for kids hanging around shops. When we turn away a kid for being underage to buy ciggies often or not a few minutes later an adult will come in with the same change the kid had and ask for the exact same ciggies. It is illegal to buy cigerettes for an underage person. It pee’s me off big time that if I got caught selling directly to the child I would be prosecuted, but as we have reported a number of times the adult buying ciggies for a child nothing happens. Whats the point in this law?
An example of an alcohol sale we did once (sorry for going off topic).
Some months back a bloke came in and bought some alcohol, unbeknown to us (how would we know?) that he was buying for a kid. Anyway that kid got stopped coincidently by the police and was asked where he go the alcohol from. He named our shop. The police were down like a shot. We had to prove by the CCTV footage that we did not serve this kid nor had he been in the shop and showed them the guy who purchased the alcohol and illegally passed it on to the kid. Absolutely nothing was done to that guy, but if it had been proven we were in the wrong my licence would have been taken off me.
If adults were prosecuted for buying for kids and made examples of it might just help the problems just a little bit of underage smoking.
I also have a customer who comes in and buys ciggies for her 16 yr old daughter. She quite happily tells us “she’s old enough to smoke but not old enough to buy”. Amazes me somtimes, if she’s not old enough to buy then shes not bliddy old enough to smoke!!!!!

anyway apolgies for the essay and straying off topic this subject gets my goat!
