I work in east London and one council has sold of all the allotment’s in their area for housing, five in total. Three other councils have been forced to sell their allotments to make way for the Olympics. The allotment nearest to me used to grow veg and sell it really cheaply to people. This should be encouraged not sold off to the highest bidder.
You wouldn’t be talking about the allotments on Hedgemans and Blackborne Roads would you CM ?13 January, 2008 at 7:47 pm #302994@chickenman wrote:
I would prefer free range or organic but it’s down to cost. When my local supermarket sell’s caged eggs at £1:09 and free range at £2:04 I’m not going to pay it.
Also what I don’t understand is in the 50’s and 60’s most food was free range or organic and there was a premium on the new frozen food that was introduced to the food market because it was new and convenient . Now we seem to be paying a premium on the natural food what we used to have back in the 50’s and 60’s.
When British farmers were producing to much food and we had huge milk lakes and thousands of tons of potatoes the price didn’t fall, the government still kept the price up
It’s all about greedy supermarkets and greedy governments.
lol cheapskate. The caged eggs don’t taste as good as the free range eggs. Hence why free range costs more.13 January, 2008 at 8:22 pm #302995Its hit our local tesco’s. We went to buy a free ranger today and had to settle for a barn reared (with windows and hay and room to walk and play)one as every single one had sold out. Had a big chat with a few other unhappy shoppers who also wanted one, and they went to the management to complain.
There was loads of factory farmed to for a fiver ones left and lots of reduced factory farm cuts (breasts and legs) on the reduced shelf.
People are reacting and that is great. Lets stop this barbaric treatment of meat once and for all.
13 January, 2008 at 8:31 pm #302996The shop’s love a shortage they can put the price up more  soon we will be bidding for eggs on ebay  Oh smiley like to think of myself more tight than cheap
13 January, 2008 at 8:33 pm #302997People already do chickenman. You can buy fertile eggs to home rear the chicks and produce eggs for you, and also duck eggs.

that i can afford to pay a bit more for my food, is no ones business realy exept for the fact that i went to school, and when i left school i went to work and have continued to do so for the last 30 years.
if people who dont want to work want to eat meat, then they can buy cheap meat its their choice. i choose not to.
as for being wishy washy and p.c , you obviously have me mixed up with someone who gives a sh*t
i would not dream of telling anyone else what to eat or how to shop everyone has the choice. but if you sit on your backside all day watching tv, with a can of beer in one hand and a fag in the other then you wont be able to afford the food i buy, again its a choice.
as for the original question. no i dont think we do need factory farming. but as long as we have half the nation on dss benefits and sick pay we will keep them.
one further point d.o.a if half the nation is drowning in debt it is their ownfault for having to have the latest and most expensive stuff and not wanting to work to pay for it. if you cant buy it by saving up for it [houses and transport aside] you shouldnt get loans and credit to pay for it.
we all have to have somewhere to live and most of us need a car for work. that doesnt mean you have to drive a dirty great 4×4 or a bmw. but if you want this you pay for it.
Thank you for showing us what kind of person you are and proving my point about you.The rest of us don’t matter its all about you and what you want.
And because its good for you and fits “your beliefs and life style choices” you feel the rest of us should paid for it.
Why?
Few people think and believe the same have you, so why do we have to be force feed this rubbish by looneys like you is beyond me.
Maybe if you spend a bit more time in the real world and not in the “controlled zone” you would have a better understanding how the world works.
Have no idea who ‘the rest of us’ is… I think it’s your delusional self importance playing a role, but I find the post by waspish very sensible and level headed, and indeed interesting, unlike your uneducated rants doa.

Oh i see
I used to live off Hedgemans Road, in Cartwright,,,,small allottment at the top of the road is still there, i’d often buy fresh vegetables from the guys who used to work it. Further up though, a huge area of allottments have been covered now with new 2/3 bed apartments and houses, in Blackborne Road too, agree with you tho, it’s wrong.
