Righ,t now I am officially worried.
First, the idiocy of Brexit…
now in the world of post-truth politics, Trump is in.
Now that is actually scary.
This is too big for my little mind to take in.
The causes are clear enough – the anger caused by the financial crisis, blamed on an educated and complacently arrogant liberal élite. The fact that it’s expressed in such an ugly and dangerous xenophobia has its roots, too – look at the support for George Wallace and the reaction among many working-class people to Enoch Powell in the 60s.
But the consequences are a bit awesome.
Let’s see how we get through all this.

I’ve not long woken up……….yes that’s right….
And now im in Shock that Trump is in…..never ever thought it would happen….cant picture Tresemme shampoo having a harmonious relationship with Trump….but stranger things have happened
Personally I’ve got more to worry about than what the pouting trumper is going to get up to and am far from scared.

One thing that seems likely is that a Trump victory is good news for a Brexit Britain. From being the back of the queue when it comes to a trade deal, the UK is likely to leap to the front of the queue. The tensions a brexit UK would have had with the US could well be replaced by a closer alliance of two increasingly authoritarian nations.
A nationalist authoritarianism is on the rise, and the Trump/Brexit victories are very important parts of that (there are other examples). Maybe a Le Pen victory in France next May (? though a Juppé victory seems more likely).
I don’t see a world war arising, but this rise of nationalism does seem like the final unravelling of the post-war order, built in 1944-47 to make sure a world war wouldn’t happen again. Clinton was a militarist, as drac has noted, but she knew the rules, she knew how far to push and when to stop. Now we are in a more dangerous world.
I would like sonme of Reason’s confidence and complacency about what’s happening, please *tries to rattle his head. I feel sure reason will give precise insturctions, and will follow them in the hope that the world will look different lol
It’s not complaceny, it’s as I said, I have enough to worry about without worrying what some cartoon character who I have no control over is going to do.
As for scary, hitting a brick when doing about 80 on a motorway is scary and concentrating on nipping my cheeks rather than worrying if my car rolls I might damage someone else’s paintwork.
I wouldn’t have thought a bomb shelter would actually be that expensive to build yourself, just the hire of a digger and a cement mixer.
In regards to Brexit, Trump could give our a ecconomy a significant advantage. If he reaches a comprehensive rade deal with us and then enacts protectionist policies which he seems to like. Then we would be one of a only a handful of other countries (maybe Canada?) with good access conditions to the US market.

I mean a nuclear bomb shelter, with facilities for surivival over a lengthy epriod of time until the radioactive fallout dissipates.
They built a lot of them in America in the early 60s, complete with pictures of cows in green fields on the walls so that you could psych yourself into thinking you were in a country cottage.
Also a double-barrelled shotgun in case your next door neighbour and family tried to get in for shelter.
Yes, the UK may do well with Trump there. Once trade wars break out, the US is a powerful ally.
The postwar liberal order of global regulation and movement towards general free trade – set up to prevent further world wars, is being ended, as I noted.
I think the real point here is nobody knows what Trump will do. Will his policies be far more down the centre compared to the statements and policy claims he made during the electoral process? Will his craziest ideas and policy positions be reigned in by the constitutional checks and balances in the US political system? Who will he end up nominating for the Supreme Court?
There are a lot of unknowns here.
The point is nothing will happen in the UK that massively affects the ordinary person..the world will turn the sun will rise (though strictly speaking it doesn’t rise as such) Now the mini ice age in 4 yrs time that lasts 15 yr thats a bit concerning
