Efforts to clear the parents of Madeleine McCann of any suspicion are being stepped up amid expectations of fresh police questioning.
As Portuguese detectives reportedly flew in to the UK with a list of fresh questions for Kate and Gerry McCann, friends of the couple gave the first outline of their possible defence.
Sources close to the family insist much of the police’s evidence – including the collection of Madeleine’s DNA from the family’s hire car in Praia da Luz – can be easily explained.
The car was used to transport much of the youngster’s items when the family moved to a new apartment some time after her disappearance from their original holiday let in Praia Da Luz on May 3.
Items said to have been carried include nappies worn by her twin brother and sister Sean and Amelia who have similar DNA, the Sun reported.
Madeleine’s own sandals are also believed to have been transported in the car – potentially allowing DNA from sweat to be transferred.
A source close to the couple said the vehicle had also been used by a number of people, including several family members, before it was examined.
Three Portuguese officers are reported to have arrived in Britain ahead of a fresh interrogation of the McCanns.
The couple, both 39, returned to their home in Rothley, Leicestershire, last week after spending four months in Portugal awaiting developments.
The newspaper said the officers wanted Leicestershire Police to put the questions to the McCanns, who have been declared official suspects in the case although they deny any involvement in her disappearance or death.
This seems to be getting so messy, 1 minute the police say they have evidence against the parents, next minute they dont, With so many c.ock ups and back tracking on different things, i start to wonder if the police even got them to court in future, would all this go some way to messing the case up and they could get away with it.

The case is falling apart. The evidence is now being shown up for what it is.19 September, 2007 at 11:05 am #288073Interesting ….. and yet in spite of a massive world wide hunt for Maddie – not a single sighting of her has been recorded. Lots of mistaken ones true – but she seems to have totally vanished off the face of the earth.
I was going to say that not a trace nor a hair of her has been found – but of course it (allegedly) has been found hasn’t it?
So now the sainted McCanns are entering into the damage limitation phase of this matter – putting forward (through assorted third parties) numerous theories, all of which seek to explain away the alleged ‘evidence’ of their wrong-doing.
They now have the full time assistance of Clarence Mitchell as their spokesman and media relations specialist who is an ex-BBC reporter and who recently quit his full time job in the Cabinet Office as the Government’s head of media monitoring.
His brief from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is to help clear the McCann’s name.
Also in the news: a senior Portuguese police officer said yesterday that the police are ”fed up” with Kate & Gerry McCann’s attempts to involve high-profile public figures in their daughter’s case and that they believe it may be jeopardising their ongoing investigation.
It was said that their actions were nothing more than “constant interruptions and distractions.”

Almost chocked on my Coffee after seeing that. This is the same Portugese Police Force who have acted like the Keystone Cops throughout the whole thing.
Putting out lie after lie after lie. Smear after smear after smear. The Portugese Police Force have as much credibility as Walter Mitty.
One of their Investigators quit the other day because he didnt like what his collegues were trying to do to the McCanns. The McCanns are entitiled to ask whoever they like to get involved in it. They are British Citizens after all.

Sorry to hear about your coffee BM.
The press report of the investigator leaving said that his reason for going was that he was fed up with having to deal with Media enquiries all day long when he was prevented by their secrecy laws from ‘officially’ answering them or saying anything. It was nothing at all to do with ”what the police are trying to do to the McCanns.”
IF the sainted and holy McCanns are involved in Maddie’s demise, then it suits them very well to constantly point to the apparent inefficiencies of the local police – which they contrive to do at every turn through a constant series of press statements from their family and ‘friends’.
There are millions of pounds in reward money currently being offered for ANY information at all leading to the discovery of Maddie.
Additionally, the McCanns are now launching yet another Media campaign – funded by the millions of pounds in donations made when this whole thing first occurred – with worldwide publicity, advertisements, articles, appeals for information ….. every possible thing that a really well orchestrated and funded Media campaign can do.
I will make a prediction: Nothing … absolutely nothing at all will come of it.
There will be no sightings of her; no new witnesses will come forward to tell what happened; she (or her body) will not be discovered anywhere as a result of all this activity; no new suspects will be discovered;…. absolutley and utterly nothing will come of it…. whilst the entire world will be exhorted to carry on and on searching for her.
Only the McCanns really know what happened ….. and they are keeping ‘schtumm” – just like Ian Brady & Myra Hindley did all those years ago.
19 September, 2007 at 11:09 pm #288077That’s the official reason for him leaving…
You’re totally bang out of order comparing the McCanns to those two.

I don’t see why. Leaving aside the more unsavoury aspects of their acts and the fact that they murdered children …. my comparison was that both couples concealed both their acts and the bodies and maintained their total innocence throughout.
Even after Brady and Hindley were both convicted, for years afterwards they steadfastly refused to say what they had done with the bodies or where they had buried them. Hindley apparently tried to disclose the locations many years later, but to this day Brady denies everything.
THAT was the comparison I was drawing.
19 September, 2007 at 11:21 pm #288079There is no getting away from the fact that the evidence so far is bollocksed up.
So on goes the gos!
The Moors murderers though PB…..!!
19 September, 2007 at 11:25 pm #288080I also dont see where you’re going with this she’ll never be found thing. Even if she is never found how does that point to the McCann’s anymore than it points to anyone else.
Of course it doesnt but the evidence is shattered to bits, so ya gotta have something I guess.Anyways gonna take DOA’s advice, and stick a lid on this for a while.
