24 March, 2008 at 12:24 am #319164The main problem right now is that tax is too low and no one in their right mind is going to put them up.
I know this maybe a silly idea but public workers all ask for high wages and more investment and people would agree, but who the hell is going to pay for them?
Or are we going to force single people yet again to foot the bill?
24 March, 2008 at 9:58 am #319165The rate of income tax in Holland is 42%. That isnt for high earners. Thats what Joe average pays. Thats almost double what you lot pay isnt it?
The public transport infrastructure here is second to none.
There is no such thing as a NHS system. Why? Because it simply doesnt work.
Hospital waiting lists. What are they?
There are schools a plenty, and not run as they are in the UK with all kids, no matter how intelligent or dumb they are, thrown into the same school. Kids are put into schools that are suited to their ability’s. (I think you are trying out a similair stystem over there with so called “special” schools. Except here the system has been up and running for years and is a normal part of school education “all” over the country and not just in certain citys).
The bottom line is. If you want top quality services you have to pay for them. Goverments can be voted out of power in England at the mere threat of raising income taxes by as little as 1p in the pound. The whole country would be up in arms at the thought of such a thing. Thats why you get stealth taxes. Because you all moan about the state your country is in but when asked to pay something towards putting it right the answer is a resounding NO!24 March, 2008 at 10:15 am #319166@fastcars wrote:

And that my friends is a perfect example of why your poor sad country will remain a poor sad country. Because of the attitude of the poor sad people that live in it. I too saw the the news clips of the residents of Yorkshire during the days Shannon Matthews was missing, as did the rest of the world. If that is an example of what your race has become then I pity you all. But of course… Britain will always be “Great” wont it.

Wally has been found24 March, 2008 at 3:46 pm #319171In the UK we would never dream of subsiding business, but we do subsidize low paying jobs, which is the same thing.
There is no labour shortage has long has the steady stream of immigrates continues.
If there was a labour shortages the wages and tax revenues would increase, and there would be no need for a min wage.
The out date argument that higher wages would cost jobs is a lost cause, most manufacturing moved over seas years ago. Those s still working in manufacturing are earning well above the min wage.
What we have been doing for years is subsiding catering, cleaning and other low skill business that mostly employs overseas workers. All this kinds of business could never relocate dew to there nature.
So where does it leave us?
We should be limiting access to the welfare programs for immigrates for at least 10 years and making it clear to any business that if they continue to pay the min wage, the min wage will go up to a point where such things has family credit are redundant.
Has my dad told me many years ago, the problem with the working class is simple, they will always stab each other in the back for the price of a loaf of bread.
