31 October, 2008 at 6:01 am #379812I dedicate a song to Ian….
Last week a man shot himself dead in a northampton hospital, I like many others at the time thought what an awful thing, maybe for a fleeting moment….. the news of this suicide would have then faded into the background along with the rest of the news about credit crunches, ross n brandt , presidential elections…….
I found out yesterday morning , that I knew this person. Its no secret where he worked or who he was. His name was Ian Button, a name when we first started doing business with the company he worked for we chuckled over at work. We leased vans from him. In the early days Ian would come into the office, we would make a cuppa, sort out the paperwork and quotes, then we would sit and put the world to rights, never hurried, talk about our families, kids , life and careers and anything other subject that happened our way. He was never in a hurry, always gave you real time, not just a salesman but someone who cared, cared about people, cared about getting it right.
Ian had a triple by pass a few years ago, but always valued the ‘second chance’ he had been given, he spoke of his son, and his wife who he had been married to for 40 years.
I phoned the company he worked for yesterday as I at least wanted to acknowledge to Ian’s family my sadness at his death. I spoke to a lady there for some time and in and out of the conversation she said several times this wasnt Ian, no one could understand what had happened and why he did it. See Ian’s wife had alzheimers, he had sold his house not only to pay for her stay in a home, but so he could move nearer to her. He himself was poorly with a lung disease.
I will never know what made this man committ suicide , he was a gentleman in every sense of the word, and although we werent close friends as such, he was someone who touched my life and I am glad he did. Sure you can say he was selfish taking his life, especially in the manner he did with no apparent thought for those around him or for those that would have to deal with it, but something in his life tipped the balance of reason for him , we will never know.
Ian this is for you, you would have appreciated this ….. rest in peace
