A small insight for the majority of you. Searing, the poster you lambasted, then banned yesterday. Forty two year old male. Sixteen years in the British Army, lost both legs below the knee in Afghanistan, medical discharge. Could well be sitting around on a pension right now. But chooses to work as a fully trained paramedic, for his local Ambulance service.
He in his every day life, does more to help others, than any of you, on your one of walks or sponsorships. He raises funds and society awareness for those who have lost limbs or been disabled through military conflict and will continue to do so.
Although his wife, left him, took his kids, while he was in hospital recovering from his own injuries, he continues to support his children fully and completely.
Just been catching up on the rest of the thread.
I assume you had his permission to share all that personal information.
Incidentally, you have no idea what any of us here does to help others in our everyday lives. You have no idea what the personal circumstances of people here are other than what they chose to share. He has a story, but so do many other people here. And therein lies the dichotomy of message boards and chatrooms…as has been said before you can disclose as much or as little as you like, be honest or fabricate a life for yourself. Hey, you can even have more than one id and role play to your heart’s content. When it comes down to it, whether we be unemployed and on benefits or managing directors; street cleaners or nurses; carers or cared for – all we are here are words on a screen, no facial expressions, tone of voice, inflections, and as such open to the interpretation of others, something that is beyond our control. We can only hope that people will understand the intent behind the words and not misinterprete them, deliberately or otherwise.
We can’t all be heros, I’d like to think that we all do what we can, whether it’s doing a sponsored walk or something much bigger, or simply offering a helping hand and a listening ear when it’s needed. And if everyone actually took some time each day to show some compassion for their fellow man and reach out to make a difference, however small that difference may seem, all of those moments would add up to something wonderful. Even the smallest gesture is meaningful and can make a difference. So please don’t belittle it.
