I was at a friend’s once sharing a takeaway, the friend’s husband was quite refined in his manners. Chewing a piece of chicken I found what I assumed to be a piece of gristle…dilemma, swallow it or not? He noticed and said “oh sometimes their chicken has bits of gristle, spit it out into your napkin” so I did and of course looked at what I’d spat out (which is not the done thing apparently)…and dissolved into fits of laughter. There it was, not a bit of gristle at all but a plastic spaceman of the kind you used to get in breakfast cereals! My friend laughed with me but her po-faced husband just sat there pointing out he didn’t see what was so funny as it was a family-run takeaway….
Made me wonder…do “refined manners” and a sense of humour go together? That may be a topic for another thread!
