If this government cared about children they would invest in youth clubs and other organised events. Not only would it keep the kids active, it would prevent them slipping into bad ways and giving themselves an even worse reputation.
There is a big gap needing to be filled for kids between say 11 and 17, and it really would prevent a hell of a lot of misery if there were more to do than hanging around streets being snubbed by adults.
1 June, 2008 at 6:43 pm #339845It’s not so much the kids though, it’s the adults complaining about them that’s actually worse. ‘There’s kids on the roof – dial 999’ Did you say they’ve fallen off the roof? ‘No’ Then who f**king cares? Why have you phoned 999? Now you’ve reported it, officers will have to attend even though there’s no need. It’s your fault there’s no police around when people need them, you can explain that to the little old lady who may well be mugged in an area where foot patrols are normally carried out.
Why didn’t you just ignore them and let the problem sort itself out one way or another?
We had stuff for the youth here but they ruined it for themselves, we had discos for them but then the complaints of 14 year olds wandering round/going home drunk saw an end to that. Then there was the youth cafe which they ruined with their own behaviour and got local residents complaining. Anything else has went the same way for one reason or another.
1 June, 2008 at 6:45 pm #339846I partly agree but why should it be down to the government? Surely we have the kids and it’s up to us to make sure they are entertained and kept in check, what’s wrong with dad or mum taking the kids to the park or swimming? Both cheap and fun.
We have youth groups where we live, my son goes to one but if it wasn’t there it wouldn’t be the end for him, I take my kids all over, bowling, pictures, the park, swimming, the allotment, picnics. Never bored nor are they disrespectful. Parents that let their kids hang around on the streets are the problem, not the government.
1 June, 2008 at 6:48 pm #339847I think the problem is, sian, that a lot of kids don’t want their friends to see them spending their summer holidays with mummy & daddy.
1 June, 2008 at 6:49 pm #339848That is true but not all parents are willing to do it or can afford to, so their kids end up the same as them, and that is where the government should fund more local projects, especially in areas of poverty and low employment.
Watching that dance group Flava on BGT and hearing them talk, the lad had so much respect for his Mum and was a well rounded kid, and they hope to tour their act around youth clubs and schools and talk to kids about keeping out of trouble. That sort of thing would be ace.

Fuck cool, I want my kids safe, I want to know where they are at all times, my eldest isn’t into alot of the stuff I want to do with him but he comes because he values family time.
Parent are the problem, to mixed up in themselves to give a fuck.
1 June, 2008 at 7:08 pm #339851Its the same with the world of football, if more were invested in kids football we would have a great national side.
My son’s football team is run completely on donations and people willing to put in the time. But they could do with a few midweek training sessions.
1 June, 2008 at 7:17 pm #339852That’s something I don’t really get, the whole concept of wanting to know where your kids are at all times but then I’m not a parent. What I do know is that as a child I did whatever the hell I wanted wherever the hell I wanted. When I say child, I mean child. Not 11, 12 or 13. That’s not a criticism of my parents, that’s a reflection of what I was like. They were damned if they did and damned if they didn’t. The more they pulled towards one direction, the further I’d run in the other. I had my ‘teenage rebellion’ ten years before everyone else. After that I just wasn’t interested.
I love my family but I valued my freedom more, especially at that age and it hasn’t done me any harm. I don’t do drugs, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t stand on street corners shouting abuse at people for fun – never have done.
But then, times have changed so I can see your point.

The summer hols are the worst, it’s too long, the kids get bored and turn into horrid lil gits
Perhaps the feeling is mutual.
