Also, I don’t think the last line is humorous at all.

If it was intended to be humorous, then it would weaken the poem dramatically.

I see the last line as terrifying. The son is petrified, and the dad using gentle words underlines the terror.

yes, there’s a typo. My posts are full of them.

I really don’t care what the theme is. I’ve read a poem about bestiality with a goat, – think of the rape of the 10 year-old girl by Stavrogin

    Whatever floats your boat

That’s an infantile comment on what’s universally regarded as a genuine classic of world literature..

It was censored when Dostoevsky first published the novel in the  1870s, and was restored because it brought great depth to the story. It wasn’t a salacious account, and neither is the poem salacious.

Jeez, we’ll have the wowsers back next burning James Joyce books.

Sceptical, you have stated you enjoy reading poems about goats being buggered so rather than stating what kind of depraved mindset would enjoy such “works” if you can call pulling your pants down in a field , popping a goats back legs into wellingtons and screwing it senseless in an animal farm remake as “works” I simply stated whatever floats your boat. I can’t imagine going into a library and asking at the reception ” can you point me to the book where billy goat gruff gets raped in a field my good man”.

Dexy hardly ever posts on the boards and when he does , writes a poem about a paedophile coming home to abuse his kid. I find it bizarre but in your eyes it’s an intelligent bit of work straight from the literary files of Shakespeare no doubt.

To summarise so far, we have a poem on a paedophile father, goat being raped and 10 year old being molested- any other masterpieces to discuss from the dead poets society on here or are we done?

Nope, I didn’t enjoy reading the poem about the goat, though I think your account of it should be frowned upon as salacious. It was part of a course on US Classical Literature.

News for you, me laddie, Dostoevsky’s The Possessed isn’t a poem. It’s a very powerful novel – just finished it, after decades promising myself I would..

The point I was making was that poetry – literature – expresses the unspeakable.

Shakespeare’s The Rape of Lucrece (a poem) is norty (not bad spelling). Titus Andronicus (a play) deals with the rape and mutilation of a young woman, and feeding the remains of two dead boys to the mother, after they were baked in a pie. It is very salacious – a revival in the 50s had the Red Cross on standby to take people to recover from the shock. The Tempest is iffy as well, when it comes to Caliban and Miranda. Me no like Titus, me like The Tempest.

Is it ok to write about rape in your approach to literature?

I loved reading Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov when I was 17. Does that mean I get off on parricide?

You must write a Guide to the Literary Canon – it’ll really sell well.

Could I suggest Thomas Bowdler’s The Family Shakspeare as a model?

Though I think your version would sell if you put it in your own salacious style, complete with condemnatory commentary.

    psst. look at Byron

You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with poems of a sexual nature which isn’t much of a surprise given your rather creepy writing style  appearing to alter speaking to women online inundating them with kisses and sickly comments – something I’ve told you about before yet you still pursue females on the boards ” me laddie”.

I’d suggest most people coming to a chat messageboard don’t want to read about ten year olds being molested , raped goats , abused children from paedophiles sceptical .. whats next , hedgehogs being turned inside out by the discerning pervert to be used as the ultimate prickly wanksock behind a bush in Hyde park?

If these are the areas of literature that interest you scep , perhaps entitle a thread as ” Over 18s only , bestiality / paedophiles paradise logs” where you can discuss these areas of interest with fellow perverts interjected by the odd EU rant.

wrong.. I comment on what I see and you me laddie have some bizarre tastes

    Ge

I thought the poem demonstrated emotional intelligence. It didn’t automatically scream paedophilia to me. My interpretation was a powerful man, the father, abusing his family and dominating them through physical violence. I agree the last line made it even more powerful. No subject should be censored whether ‘we’ agree with it or not, like it or not. Feeling uncomforable is part of the journey and should be.
