It’s strange this one. Just over a week ago my son was given an on the spot penalty notice for riding his bike on the pavement.

Today, while out shopping, there were 3 police officers!! all riding their bikes through a pedestrian precinct in town. I asked them why they were doing this as it was actually a pedestrian precinct, I was told not to be so c ocky and to run along and mind my own business  …….. Seems once again, one rule for them, and a completely different one for the rest of us

Here here. Did they catch you on the hop with their response or were you able to make a mental not of their badge numbers. hope it was the later, in which case I’d report them. The only legitimate reason they could give is that they were persuing a suspect.

If it had been me Carol , i would have told them to show respect for their elders !

Seriously though, I’m afraid i would have made a formal complaint, who do they think they are !

nothin wrong with riding on the pavements… its not as if a bike can compete with a car on a road is it. getting run over by a bike neva killed anyone.. a cyclist gettin run over by a car has.

    Except it’s against the law

Obviously if a cyclist rides dangerously and kills a pedestrian, or another cyclist for that matter, which has been known to happen, they should face a tough penalty, possibly prison as in the recent case. I wonder though, what the position would be when a pedestrian steps into the road in front of a cyclist, causing them to swerve and fall off, and they die as a consequence. Presumably there is a law covering careless pedestrian behaviour.

I’m a cyclist, pedestrian and driver, so I’ve got a fairly balanced view on this.

As a sideline, I believe it’s the case that although general traffic laws do not apply on private land where there’s no public access, the laws about causing death or injury by careless or dangerous driving do still apply – arguably even on a motor racing circuit.

I’ve not ridden a bike since my chopper in the early 80s with bread fasteners on the brake cables and me looking like a member ofthe red hand gang!

So, have you googled it yet then Will

It’s against the law, but you seem to be one of those who only obey rules that suit you and not ones that don’t. It’s also against the law, not to mention extremely ignorant, to push the button at pelican crossings and then ride your bike across, you do this to I assume
