I read in the sun today, a column by mr rolf harris. he has had a song compiled from poetry he wrote 30 years ago on a flight where he watched footage of seal culling and it haunted him so much that whilst everybody else on the flight slept he wrote pages and pages of poetry. between 2003 and 2005 one MILLION baby seals were killed…. not for meat….. but for their fur. the hunters are in competition with each other and will use all means of getting the fur. the seals are so trusting that they often approach the hunter looking up for a sign of friendliness…. to be met with a club, often with a large nail sticking out of it. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:
hear the song at the link below. okay, its not great, but the meaning and WHY HE HAS DONE IT makes the whole thing worthwile…
I don’t mind culling to protect the fish stocks or to keep disease to a minimum amongst the remaining seals but I DON’T agree with making it into a sport or an ‘adventure holiday’ for people to get their jollies:
these seals are culled before they are three weeks old!
after that their fur is no good
they are being culled for nothing other than the fashion trade. this isnt one of the far poles or antartica where the peeps who live in igloos need the meat and fur to survive
this is that glorious country known to most as the top of america AKA CANADA!!!!
its become a driven sport, so please dont compare it with killing to live etc….
its BARBARIC TO THE EXTREME AND WE DONT NEED OR WANT IT

I don’t like any marine mammal. I especially despise the baby ones and am therefore only too pleased to see them hunted. In fact, I think we, and fish, would be better off without any of them. Maybe we should hunt them to extinction. It would be a great laugh and the price of fish fingers would tumble dramatically.

:D I can indeed explain, Lambrini. I wanted, in the French version, to encapsulate that nation’s love of allegorical philosophy, in the manner of Voltaire, Rousseau, Sartre and Foucault. I thought that might make a more fitting translation.
I wanted the north London version to bring to mind the spirit of lovable common sense displayed by Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.
