I have been watching the press conference in Norway about the attacks on a youth camp in Oslo. I know its too early to know exactly what happened but so far 87 confirmed dead. One account said the killer was dressed in a Nazi type uniform and was just killing people randomly.
Terrible pictures and accounts of what happened are simply sickening. Extremism is so dangerous yet as a society we accept free speech even when it threatens our society and existence. Indeed even on these boards we tolerate extreme views.
Should we be so tolerant? seems to me if you take the middle ground as most of us do… we are just waiting for the next attack. Do we just accept that living in a democracy its what we HAVE to put up with.
Our Quality of life is being abused and attacked… is there a solution?

This morning’s bulletins seem to be saying that the murderer was wearing a police-style outfit to blag his way around the island unchallenged and was even calling young people over and then shooting them. I wonder why he chose that particular youth camp.
The “middle ground” is not a static position, to be adhered to passively, but an active position of principle, to be defined, defended and promoted. Free speech is not just a product or symptom of a free society, it is necessary for its preservation. But it needs to be used by the whole of that society, not just by the extremists.
It is interesting how often when an extreme or abusive opinion is expressed in JC, that if someone speaks against it there are always those who will put far more energy into criticising the challenger than into opposing the extremist. As if rocking the boat is worse than trying to pull it under!
hmmmmmmmm difficult one – how can anyone ‘do’ anything about it, especially after it has been done because it is too late.
I can’t help but feel that somebody out there must know if they have a nutta living under their roof or next door. Maybe that is just my suspicious mind, I dunno.
Basically, I think, that there is nothing you can do.

I dont think that “fighting” the sysem always works. Yes , sometimes it is necessary to bear arms in defence of your land and your views ( I live in Northern ireland remember) but i believe that the system has to be changed from the inside and from the top down.

For sure anc… amid all the horrible news this weekend Sgt Pepper mentions rocking his little girl to sleep… ahhh there is hope for us all yet :D
