There are a number of posts on these Boards where the Apostrophe has been incorrectly used. This provides a poor example to those users who are academically challenged.
To resolve this here are the rules for correct use of Apostrophes in written English:
1. They are used to denote a missing letter or letters, for example:
I can’t instead of I cannot
I don’t instead of I do not
it’s instead of it is2. They are used to denote possession, for example:
the dog’s bone
Jones’s bakery (but Joneses’ bakery if owned by more than one Jones)… but please note that the possessive form of it does not take an apostrophe any more than ours, yours or hers do
… however, if there are two or more dogs, or Joneses in our example, the apostrophe comes after the ‘s’:
the dogs’ bones
Joneses’ bakeries3. Apostrophes are NEVER ever used to denote plurals!
Common examples of such abuse are:
Banana’s for sale which of course should read Bananas for sale
Menu’s printed to order which should read Menus printed to order
MOT’s at this garage which should read MOTs at this garage
1000’s of bargains here! which should read 1000s of bargains here!
New CD’s just in! which should read New CDs just in!In future, a serious view will be taken if any user misuses an apostrophe. Remember, we owe it to ourselves to set a good example to all ignorant Scots or Americans.

21 January, 2007 at 10:26 am #257298May i direct your attention to a few members in the arts section (mostly the same one with a different names i suspect), that could do with some swift attention for poor use of the english language. It might also stop them spamming another bloody film, over every thread imaginable.
They can be found loitering in the outlaw thread.
(Not any more!!! …. Ed)

Absolutely not salacia – Tommy / Geoff has made a big enough meal out of digging at your ‘shorthand’ without my needing to go there.

In all honesty youre bringing this to the fore just now saves me the trouble of drawing your attention to it myself!………..the grammar and pronunciation displayed on here is nothing short of f*cking diabolical!…..
I would just like to say also how pleased I am that somebody has actually taken it upon himself, ( probably completely unpaid! ) to raise the standard of communication around here.
